What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lamp Interpreter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lamp Interpreter, you need fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English, along with professional interpreter training or certification such as RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) credentials. Familiarity with video relay services, remote interpreting platforms, and specialized terminology relevant to the assignment is often required. Excellent listening, cultural competency, and the ability to remain impartial under pressure are critical soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate, effective communication and equal access for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in diverse settings.

What are Lamp Interpreters?

Lamp Interpreters are professionals who facilitate communication between individuals who use sign language and those who do not, often specializing in a method called 'Language Acquisition through Motor Planning' (LAMP). They help bridge the gap by interpreting spoken language into LAMP-supported communication and vice versa, primarily for people with autism or other communication challenges. Their role is essential in educational, therapeutic, and community settings, ensuring that everyone can participate and understand. Lamp Interpreters must have specialized training in both sign language and the LAMP approach to be effective in their work.
