Job Title: Test Engineer -ย R&D (Contract to Hire)
Location: San Diego, CA
Duration: 6 Months with possibility of extension

  • Be flexible with work hours and responsive to shifting priorities, including early mornings, late nights, or possible overtime when necessary to support testing schedules, project demands, or urgent operational tasks.

Responsibilities:
  • Drive the execution of test activities across all phases of product development.
  • Collect and document test results using good documentation practices and assist in failure analysis to support root-cause investigations.
  • Conduct feasibility testing, developmental testing, characterization testing, material testing, and design verification testing while supporting all engineering requests from the R&D teams.
  • Operate various test equipment, including vernier scales, microscopes, tensile testing machines, multimeters, oscilloscopes, temperature probes, data acquisition systems, drop testing equipment, mechanical shock and vibration equipment, environmental chambers, hardness testers, and fatigue testing machines.
  • Support the development of test procedures, equipment/fixture builders, and any documentation that supports testing.
  • Support fixture or equipment development for product testing, including designing and testing equipment or fixtures, processes, and completing engineering studies and validations.
  • Assist in lab management, including equipment troubleshooting, safety protocol enforcement, documentation, lab organization, and audit preparation to ensure compliance and efficiency.
  • Write clear and compliant technical documentationโ€”including test procedures, protocols, reports, process instructions, etcโ€”especially when developing or improving test methods.
What makes the candidate successful:
  • BS or MS in Mechanical, Biomedical, or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent, with 0โ€“2 years of experience.
  • Experience designing fixtures, tools, or equipment using CAD software (SolidWorks or OnShape preferred).
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or high-level programming language (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C, VBA).
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis, DOE techniques (e.g., Gauge R&R, t-test, ANOVA), and data interpretation.
  • Hands-on experience with electromechanical test equipment and measurement systems, with strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with effective technical writing for protocols and reports.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong time management and prioritization abilities.
  • Demonstrated initiative, fast learning, and curiosity to explore new tools and methods.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt in a dynamic testing environment.
  • Collaborative team player who works effectively across R&D teams and is flexible with work hours when needed.
  • Critical thinker who adapts quickly, solves problems independently, and thrives in a dynamic testing environment.
Required Skills (Top 3 non-negotiables):
  • Hands-on Testing: Ability to execute feasibility, development, characterization, and design verification testing.
  • Must have strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills to independently troubleshoot issues, evaluate options, and develop effective solutions in a dynamic testing environment.
  • Must be capable of writing clear and compliant test procedures, protocols, reports, and equipment builder documentation to support method development and validation.
Preferred Skills (Nice to have):
  • CAD Experience: Ability to design fixtures or tools using CAD software (SolidWorks or OnShape preferred)
  • Understanding of statistical tools like ANOVA, t-tests, and Gauge R&R to support test method validation (TMV) and measurement system analysis (MSA)
  • Experience with tools like LabVIEW, TestStand, or custom Python scripts to automate repetitive test procedures.
