Job description

Computed Tomography Technologist

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing computed tomography procedures, including CT procedures of an invasive nature.

Job Duties

  • Ensures that all accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome.
  • Performs diagnostic x-ray and CT exams according to established protocol and with the least amount of radiation needed to obtain a quality image.
  • Explains and prepares the patient for all CT exams.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of RIS, PACS, Laborworkx and other computer software as assigned.
  • Identifies each patient correctly verifying the exam to be performed.
  • Reviews each patient's medical history and clinical diagnosis for appropriateness of exam.
  • Reviews diagnostic x-ray and CT images for technique, positioning, laterality, patient demographics and image quality and repeats images of poor quality.
  • Establishes intravenous access, using sterile technique, to inject contrast media.
  • Supports the School of Radiology educational process.
  • Supervises students as outlined in the Student Supervision policy.
  • Trains radiography students and new employees while providing quality patient care.
  • Adheres to the Iowa Department of Public Health Radiation Safety Regulations as it applies to worker and patient safety in the CT department.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.

Department Specific Duties

Imaging Center:

  • Performs diagnostic x-ray (fixed and portable) and CT exams according to established protocol.
  • Explains and prepares the patient for all CT and x-ray exams.
  • Reviews diagnostic x-ray (fixed and portable) and CT images for technique, positioning, laterality, patient demographics and image quality. Will repeat images of poor quality.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Competent in using diagnostic (fixed and portable) x-ray equipment.
  • Competent with Computed Tomography equipment and scanning.
  • Competent in using department information systems and PACS.

Professional Experience

  • One year experience in CT preferred.

Education

  • Education sufficient to obtain required licensure.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

  • American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) or (CT) certificate required.
  • Iowa Department of Public Health State Permit to Practice Diagnostic Radiography required.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
