Job description

Job Description
Work under the supervision of the Director and department lead, to enter and admit patients into the hospital and laboratory computers and order appropriate tests. Respond to questions and requests from lab customers; answer telephones and direct calls as needed. Retrieve specimen, maintain files, specimen blocks and slides as needed. Logs all specimens into the computer prior to testing. Performs waived testing and phlebotomy. Collect or monitor the collection of specimens for certain special testing, and maintain files relevant to referral service testing and hospital laboratory. Greet patients, visitors, and customers in a professional, courteous manner.
Responsibilities
  • Verify proper labeling and specimen integrity with documentation as needed. Logs specimens into Meditech, delivers specimens to designated department for testing. Places specimens on hematology analyzer. Centrifuges STAT specimens when needed.
  • Performs waived testing as needed. Documents quality control. Enters results into the patient's EMR.
  • Perform phlebotomy as needed for outpatients.
  • Enter patient data into hospital and laboratory computers to ensure correct identification, processing, and billing. Correctly assigns ICD-10 codes to referral accounts in a timely manner (within 24 hours). Calls physician office for missing billing information or required patient demographic information in a timely manner (within 24 hours).
  • Order tests on specimens, label specimens, and deliver specimens to departments. Communicates with physician's offices and document any specimen issues.
  • Serve as customer service contact for physicians' offices to resolve requisition and specimen problems. Fax and mail reports to offices. Fill requests from client offices for specimen collection supplies.
  • Answer telephones; answer inquiries or direct calls to correct destination. Help customers as needed for excellent customer services. Communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and hospital staff. Gives excellent customer service while focusing on RESPECT Plus.
  • Perform computer functions necessary to support specimen received, accessioning specimens and result verification. Sends and files patient reports as needed.
  • Maintain file of requisitions and reports.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education
  • H.S. Diploma - Required

Work Experience
  • Four to six weeks orientation and training period to become competent. Additional time necessary for proficiency. - Required

Licenses and Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required within 90 Days
  • CPI: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention - Required within 90 Days

Essential Technical/Motor Skills
  • Ability to speak clearly. Ability to type on computer keyboard.
  • Ability to read, write, count, and reason required.
  • Good communication skill and precise hand\eye coordination.

Interpersonal Skills
  • Must have very good interpersonal skills; able to give instructions and directions clearly; understand and think through processes.

Essential Physical Requirements
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift 20-30 pounds, good vision.

Essential Mental Abilities
  • Ability to follow protocol for performing necessary computer operations.
  • Ability to concentrate on process of inputting data to computer screens in noisy environment with many interruptions.
  • Ability to organize workflow and workload efficiently.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in work area.

Essential Sensory Requirements
  • Ability to see to read requisitions and labels, perform phlebotomy, and operate computer.
  • Ability to hear in order to use telephone and communicate with Referral clients and staff.

Exposure to Hazards
  • Infectious body fluids, hazardous chemicals and fumes, and the possibility of needle-stick.
