Job description

Medical Laboratory Technician 1 and Medical Laboratory Technician 2

We are looking for dedicated Medical Laboratory Technician 1 and Medical Laboratory Technician 2 in the Fairfax area to work in children's specialties including Inova Children's Hematology/Oncology. These roles will be full-time, day shift with varying hours from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.

Medical Laboratory Technician 1: 

The Medical Laboratory Technician 1 communicates effectively and works cooperatively with team members to optimize job performance and foster working relationships. Demonstrates knowledge of operational and regulatory standards. Ensures quality specimens for laboratory testing by recognizing pre-analytical factors that adversely affect patient results. Operates systems/methodologies in order to produce timely and accurate data for patients, QC, and proficiency testing. Participates in professional growth opportunities to enhance personal, team, and departmental development by demonstrating operational knowledge and adhering regulatory standards. Reports clinical data accurately and efficiently.

 

Medical Laboratory Technician 2: 

The Medical Laboratory Technician 2 ensures quality specimens for Laboratory testing by recognizing pre-analytical factors that adversely affect patient results. Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with team members to optimize job performance and foster working relationships. Demonstrating a knowledge of operational/regulatory standards. Operates systems/methodologies in order to produce timely and accurate data for patients, quality control and proficiency testing. Participates in professional growth opportunities to enhance personal, team and departmental development by demonstrating operational knowledge and adhering to regulatory standards.

 

Duties and Responsibilities - Medical Laboratory Technician 1

  • Floats to other areas to maintain productivity and proficiency. 

  • Follows site specific standard operating procedures, manuals and instructions. 

  • Reports clinical data accurately and efficiently so that care givers receive timely patient information. 

  • Notifies appropriate individual(s), including technical support, of problems or discrepancies according to established procedures. 

  • Minimizes department expenses by using resources efficiently while avoiding urgent supply requests and inventory loss due to expiration. 

  • Adheres to regulatory agency guidelines (e.g. CAP, The Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, OSHA, State, FDA, AABB, etc.). 

  • Performs routine/special specimen collection, sample preparation and result reporting while maintaining positive patient identification throughout. 

  • Proficient with computers; familiarity with laboratory and hospital information systems. 

  • Adheres to laboratory safety procedures and processes at all times. 

  • Operates systems/methodologies in order to produce timely and accurate data for patients, QC, and proficiency testing. 

  • Demonstrates knowledge performing special procedures per facility department and based on competency assessment specific to those procedures. 

  • May perform additional duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities - Medical Laboratory Technician 2

  • Medical Laboratory Technician 2 ensures quality specimens for Laboratory testing by recognizing pre-analytical factors that adversely affect patient results. 
  • Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with team members to optimize job performance and foster working relationships. 
  • Demonstrating a knowledge of operational/regulatory standards. 
  • Operates systems/methodologies in order to produce timely and accurate data for patients, quality control and proficiency testing. 
  • Participates in professional growth opportunities to enhance personal, team and departmental development by demonstrating operational knowledge and adhering to regulatory standards.

Minimum Requirements - Medical Laboratory Technician 1

  • Education: Associate's Degree in science from a college/university recognized by regional or national accreditation agency. ADD: Other acceptable forms of education will follow the guidelines of American Society for Clinical Pathology or American Medical Technologists Board certification. For TA + Onboarding: FORMS OF ACCEPTABLE EDU: Associate's degree or 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) in chemistry and 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) in biology with the ELIGIBILITY for ASCP Board certification And one of the following:Successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science or Accredited Bureau of Health Education Schools accredited Medical Lab Technician program. Successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course within the last ten years. Or three years of full-time acceptable clinical experience for eligibility for Medical Lab Technician. ***Board certification ELIGIBILITY can be used as proof that this requirement is met**

  • Experience: Successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science or Accredited Bureau of Health Education Schools accredited Medical Lab Technician program., or a foreign medical laboratory science clinical training program within the last 12 months can be used in lieu of 1 year of full time acceptable clinical experience.

  • Certification: Must be eligible for Medical Lab Technician (American Society for Clinical Pathology ) or Medical Lab Technician (American Medical Technologists Board) certification per the ASCP/AMT guidelines. Certification must be established within 2 years of hire date.

 

Preferred Qualifications - Medical Laboratory Technician 1

  • Previous Pediatric Specialists of Virginia (PSV) work experience

Minimum Requirements - Medical Laboratory Technician 2

  • Education: Associate's degree in science from a college/university recognized by regional or national accreditation agency.   • Certification: Certified Medical Lab Technician or Medical Laboratory Technician-Upon start.

Preferred Qualifications - Medical Laboratory Technician 2

  • Previous Pediatric Specialists of Virginia (PSV) work experience

  • More than 1 year of clinical practice experience
