About the Job

We are seeking a Laboratory Manager to join our tight-knit and cross-functional team at florrent, and to lead and optimize operations for our growing laboratory. This role is critical to maintaining our high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency as we scale of production of our novel supercapacitor active material, Contoured Carbonâ„¢. The ideal candidate will bring both technical expertise and leadership skills to drive our laboratory operations forward.

As Laboratory Manager at florrent, you will report directly to florrent’s Chief Technology Officer, and work with stakeholders at all levels of the organization to streamline florrent’s materials creation workflow, developing new QA/QC processes, working with the team to bring consistency and determinism to critical data creation streams, and interfacing with equipment vendors to ensure well run and maintained metrology and ancillary equipment.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will

  • Maintain equipment inventory and usage logs while ensuring compliance with manufacturer-specified operating conditions and protocols
  • Oversee sample tracking and chain of custody procedures. Codevelop, implement, and maintain comprehensive QA/QC workflows
  • Create and update Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Develop and maintain equipment scheduling and resource allocation systems
  • Conduct safety reviews and provide ongoing safety training to florrent team members. Overall, foster a collaborative and safety-conscious laboratory culture
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations, as well as developing and maintaining emergency response procedures. Oversee waste management and disposal protocols
  • Manage laboratory space floorplan and organizational planning
Qualifications

  • Oversee all laboratory equipment maintenance, calibration, and performance monitoring. Manage vendor relationships and negotiate maintenance contracts; coordinate equipment installations, upgrades, and replacements
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, or related scientific field
  • 3+ years of experience in a commercial wet laboratory environment
  • Experience with multiple material metrology and instrumentation workflows
  • Proven experience with regulatory compliance (FDA, EPA, OSHA, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience managing laboratory personnel
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and best practices
  • Experience with equipment maintenance and vendor management
  • Proficiency in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and electronic lab notebooks (ELNs)
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities
Preferred
  • Experience in a startup or small company environment; if you’ve worn a lot of hats in the past, this is a big plus
  • Experience procuring, running, and/or maintaining battery cyclers, gloveboxes, vacuum manifolds, pressurized air manifolds, high-temperature furnaces.
  • Experience with materials metrology and analytical instrumentation, including XRF, XPS, DSC, TGA, Raman, FTIR, NMR, etc.
  • Experience with enterprise project management tools (e.g. Microsoft Project, SmartSheet, Asana, etc.)
  • Knowledge of ISO 17025, or similar quality standards. Past work experience within an ISO-9001 environment.
  • Familiarity with Python, Matlab, R, or similar programming languages
  • Budget management and procurement experience
