Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Performs venipuncture and all other phlebotomy procedures for all age groups. Maintains all quality control systems and demonstrates exceptional customer service skills to both internal and external clientele. Is required to work at a variety of different laboratory locations and to respond to any assigned STAT requests for Skilled Nursing Facilities, Home draws, etc.
As a Phlebotomist you will be responsible for:
โ€ข Exceptional Patient Care: Contribute to the overall quality of care for the patient through accurate, skilled phlebotomy draws, specimen processing, and excellent customer service. Perform venipuncture and all other phlebotomy procedures for all groups. Verifies that the appropriate specimen has been obtained/received for the test requested. Maintains integrity of the specimen.
โ€ข Excellent Communicator: Communicate effectively (written and verbal) with administrators, colleagues, patients, and healthcare providers.
โ€ข Strong Contributor: Provide assistance as needed throughout the Hospital. Required to work at a variety of different laboratory locations and to respond to any assigned STAT requests for Skilled Nursing Facilities, home draws, etc. Completes STAT requests within defined turnaround times and responds promptly to requests.
โ€ข Technical Familiarity: Understand the operation/maintenance of Lab equipment, computer-based applications (email, and standard applications such as Microsoft Office). Maintains a safe work environment in the laboratory by meeting all regulatory standards and following Universal Precaution.
โ€ข Active Teamwork: Demonstrate problem solving, conflict resolution, and positive communication through teamwork. Willing to assist where needed.
Service/Productivity/Professional
  • Routinely completes assigned work on time. Completes STAT requests within defined turnaround times.
  • Verifies that the appropriate specimen has been obtained/received for the test requested. Maintains integrity of the specimen.
  • Provides quality Customer Service in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Check inventory and rotate supplies; restock supplies when necessary.
  • Confirms all patients' demographics using departmental guidelines and updates for appropriate accessioning in the computer system.
  • Recognizes limitations/resourcefulness of their competency within the realm of the job description.
  • Effectively interacts with Laboratory personnel from all departments to resolve routine issues.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of internal systems to complete assigned tasks.
  • Maintains a safe work environment in the laboratory by meeting all regulatory standards and following Universal Precaution.
  • Presents to the department prepared to work in a timely fashion according to scheduled hours.
  • Performs additional tasks/assignments/projects to benefit the organization.

  • Qualifications
  • Educational / Minimum requirements:
  • High School diploma or High School Equivalency Required.
  • Phlebotomy Certification via NPA or CPT(ASCP) required within 12 months of hire.
  • State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
  • A valid CT driver's license is required.
  • Current certification strongly preferred via NPA or CPT(ASCP).
  • Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
  • General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.
  • Requirements:
  • Strong interpersonal skills; strong phlebotomy skills. Ability to float and work at various draw stations at any given time. Adaptability and flexibility necessary for work schedule and patient care requirements. Data entry, computer knowledge, customer service skills and valid CT driver's license is required. Must be willing to work in and travel to off-site locations. Good command of the English language, computer skills and medical terminology, ICD-9 coding, medical office/ hospital experience desired. Strong attention to detail is needed as well.
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Walking, standing, sitting, bending required. Must work under the stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands requiring accuracy. Position requires ability to constantly lift light objects less than 20 lbs., perform moderately difficult manipulative skills, arm-hand steadiness, and hand-eye coordination skills; walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods; see objects closely and hear normal sounds with some background noises.
  • Special Requirements:
  • If working in outpatient or long-term care environment, must have a car to drive to facilities and a valid Connecticut driver's license in good standing; $100,000-$300,000 automobile liability insurance.
  • Work Environment:
  • Employee may frequently be exposed to blood, body tissues and/or fluids and hazardous waste materials. Proper PPE is supplied by the employer.
  • Cognitive Requirements:
  • Position requires ability to concentrate on moderate detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time. Individual must be able to understand and relate to the concept behind specific ideas and remember multiple tasks given to self and others over long periods of time, able to communicate verbally, using advanced level vocabulary.
