About the Lab
The Blanco lab (www.deohs.washington.edu/faculty/magali-blanco) in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington has an outstanding opportunity for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join their team. Dr. Blanco's lab applies quantitative, data-driven methods in environmental epidemiology to investigate the health effects of environmental exposures. Current research focuses on air pollution, heat, community exposures, and aging health outcomes, including cognitive function and neuropathology.
Position Description
The postdoctoral scholar will develop and validate air pollution exposure models using community measurements, machine learning, and other quantitative methods. They will conduct environmental epidemiology analyses evaluating the effects of air pollution on brain health and aging outcomes. The position includes opportunities to contribute to related lab projects through data analysis, manuscript preparation, and presentations.
Position duties
  • Use quantitative, spatial analytic, and coding skills to develop and validate exposure assessment models using existing air pollution, heat, and other environmental data. Conduct quality assurance and quality control throughout the modeling process. Validate models against reference data.
  • Conduct literature reviews to inform novel approaches for exposure modeling
  • Conduct statistical and quantitative analyses of environmental health data
  • Conduct environmental epidemiology analyses evaluating the health implications of environmental exposures, including cognitive function and neuropathologic outcomes
  • Collaborate and communicate with interdisciplinary team members
  • Disseminate results by leading manuscripts, poster presentations, and conference talks

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • PhD in public health (e.g., environmental or occupational health sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics) or related field
  • Strong quantitative skills including experience with machine learning and regression analyses Proficiency in statistical programming software (R or Python)
  • Spatial statistics and GIS skills
  • Experience managing and analyzing large datasets
  • Training in environmental health, including exposure assessment and epidemiology
  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with air pollution exposure assessment methods, data, and modeling (monitoring networks, satellite data, regression, dispersion models)
  • Familiarity with population-level exposure and health data sources (e.g., EPA, Census)
  • Prior publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Grant writing experience
  • Strong project management skills

Salary range
This position is being offered at a salary range of $5,705 to $7,500 per month ($68,460-$90,000 per year), commensurate with experience. Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply.
