What is a labor intensive job?

Labor intensive jobs are occupations that require a significant amount of physical work, manual effort, or human labor rather than relying primarily on machines or technology. These jobs are often found in industries like agriculture, construction, manufacturing, and hospitality. Labor intensive jobs can involve tasks such as lifting, assembling, cleaning, or operating basic tools and equipment. Because these positions depend heavily on human effort, they may require stamina, strength, and endurance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a labor intensive job?

To thrive in a labor-intensive job, you need physical stamina, strength, and the ability to follow safety protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with tools, machinery, and basic workplace safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. Dependability, teamwork, and a strong work ethic are essential soft skills for success in physically demanding environments. These abilities ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely, minimizing injuries and maximizing productivity.

What are common physical and mental challenges faced in labor intensive roles, and how can job seekers prepare for them?

Labor-intensive roles often require prolonged periods of physical activity, such as lifting, standing, or repetitive motions, which can lead to fatigue or muscle strain. Mentally, these positions can be demanding due to the fast-paced environment and the need to maintain focus to ensure safety and quality. Job seekers can prepare by maintaining good physical fitness, learning proper ergonomics, and staying informed about workplace safety practices. It's also important to develop time management skills and resilience to handle the demanding nature of the work.

We specialize in a wide range of projects, including commercial, multifamily, residential, and public sector developments throughout Central Florida. Since our establishment in 1998 by Frank Ripa, we have consistently ranked among the Top 100 Private Companies in the Tampa Bay area.

At RIPA, our continued success as a site contractor is attributed to our highly experienced and knowledgeable field management team. Comprising skilled project managers and superintendents, they are the driving force behind our exceptional quality, productivity, and exceptional customer service. Our employees are actively involved in professional organizations such as NUCA, SUCA, Associated Builders & Contractors, TBBA, American Society of Professional Estimators, the Society for Human Resource Management, and HR Tampa.

Working at RIPA & Associates comes with a range of benefits, including but not limited to: Medical, Vision, and Dental insurance, Short-Term Disability, Voluntary Life insurance, Paid Time Off (PTO), Referral Program, Employee Assistance Program, Company-provided Life insurance, and a 401(k) retirement plan.

The Heavy Diesel Truck Mechanic is responsible for the diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance of the company's heavy-duty truck and trailer fleet. Working in the shop and in the field, this role keeps equipment safe, roadworthy, and available by accurately troubleshooting and repairing trucks and heavy-haul trailers and completing work correctly and on schedule to support the division's availability and downtime targets. The ideal candidate is an experienced diesel technician with deep expertise across Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Western Star trucks and heavy-haul trailer equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair heavy-duty diesel trucks including Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Western Star, covering engines, drivetrains, brakes, electrical, HVAC, hydraulic, and after-treatment systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair heavy-haul trailers, including detachable gooseneck (RGN) lowboys, low-boy trailers, Landoll traveling-axle trailers, and roll-back / rollback equipment.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to maximize equipment availability and keep fleet downtime below the division benchmark.
  • Operate truck and engine manufacturer diagnostic software — such as PACCAR ESA and Davie4 (Peterbilt/Kenworth), Detroit DiagnosticLink (Western Star/Daimler), and Cummins INSITE — to pull fault codes, run guided diagnostics, perform calibrations and parameter programming, and verify repairs.
  • Interpret diagnostic software output alongside wiring diagrams and OEM service manuals to accurately identify root causes and avoid repeat repairs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of OEM diagnostic tools, software updates, and after-treatment/emissions systems as fleet makes and models evolve.
  • Ensure DOT and FMCSA compliance on all inspections, repairs, and documentation; verify units are roadworthy before release.
  • Maintain accurate, timely records in the work order and maintenance management system, including labor, parts, and cause/correction detail.
  • Coordinate with dispatch and operations to prioritize repairs, minimize disruption, and communicate realistic completion timelines.
  • Manage parts needs in coordination with the parts/procurement function to control cost and reduce wait time.
  • Enforce a clean, safe, and organized shop environment and ensure adherence to all safety policies and PPE requirements.
  • Respond to and coordinate road-service or field repair calls as needed.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on heavy-duty diesel truck repair experience.
  • Proven troubleshooting and repair experience on Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Western Star trucks.
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and repairing heavy-haul trailers: detachable gooseneck lowboys, low-boys, Landolls, and roll-backs.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, drivetrains, hydraulics, air and electrical systems, and modern diagnostic tools/software.
  • Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and OEM technical documentation.
  • Valid driver's license; CDL Class A strongly preferred.
  • Own set of hand tools appropriate to the trade.
  • Working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and inspection standards.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck certification or equivalent OEM certifications.
  • Experience in a construction, heavy civil, or equipment-intensive fleet environment.
  • Experience with fleet maintenance/work order management software.
  • Welding and fabrication skills.

RIPA provides Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to Race, Color, Religion, Gender, National Origin, Age, Disability, Veteran Status, Genetic Information & Testing, Family & Medical Leave, or any other protected class in accordance with applicable Federal Laws.

In addition, RIPA complies with applicable State and Local laws governing non-discrimination in employment and reasonable accommodation in every location in which the Company has facilities. This Policy applies to all Terms and Conditions of Employment, including, but not limited to hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, leaves of absence, compensation, and training.
