OCCUPATION: Lab Analyst I DEPT.: Quality
JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE: The Lab Analyst I performs sample preparation, performs analytical testing, and manages data in support of Materion's requirements for customers and the ISO 17025 management system. The Lab Analyst I reports to the Senior Analytical Chemist or Analytical Lab Supervisor as appropriate, with dotted line responsibility to the department lead.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Work with Lab Analyst II, Sr Lab Analyst, and the department lead to receive training, use the QMS software to access and acknowledge training documents and work instructions. Provide some basic/intermediate training to other lab personnel on analytical methods and practices when required.

  • Comply with all procedures and good laboratory practices.

  • Follow standard procedures regarding sample preparation prior to instrumental analysis; this entails using rolling and cutting equipment, very accurate weighing of samples, hot plate acid digestion of samples, and accurate dilutions among other common laboratory procedures; attention to detail is a key requirement.

  • Perform testing and data recording for provided samples using the following techniques (not necessarily a complete listing):

  • ICP-OES

  • Metallography

  • GDMS

  • Tensile Testing

  • IGA (LECO)

  • Tap Density

  • Hardness Testing

  • SEM/EDX (and Image Analysis)

  • Perform basic cleaning and maintenance of equipment.

  • Maintain a safe, clean work environment, including the handling and movement of bulk acids.

  • Participate in lab projects, including process improvement projects and safety projects.

  • Proficient in the use of advanced Excel functions, LIMS (including maintenance of functions related to daily operations), SAP and other standard office software.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed on the next page are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Preference will be given to candidates with a two- or four-year degree (preferably in a STEM field). High school diploma, technical school, or GED required at a minimum, coupled with 2 or more years of relevant analytical experience.
TECHNICAL SKILLS: The individual must be able to perform the following:
  • Basic mathematical calculations

  • Read basic customer specifications

  • Understand ASTM standards with guidance

  • Follow directions to fulfill requirements for ISO 17025 accreditation

LANGUAGE SKILLS: As this role requires effective communication with other employees and the comprehension of customer specifications and other technical documents, the individual must be very proficient in speaking and writing the English language.
REASONING ABILITY: Sound decision making skills are a pre-requisite. Also, the individual must be able to take decisive action based on limited input and also determine when a decision requires supervisory input.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or touch objects, tools or controls; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel and crouch. Specific visions abilities required by this job include close vision. Good manual dexterity is required for the completion of precise and accurate tasks in a repeatable fashion.

Pay Range:
$27.18-$33.56
Actual base salary offered varies based on factors, including but not limited to, relevant skill, prior experience, education, base salary of internal peers, demonstrated performance, and geographic location.
The selection of the person to be hired for this position is contingent on the candidate having export compliance eligibility for access to U.S. controlled technology which comes under the licensing jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of State, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the U.S. Department of Commerce, Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
The candidate selected will have to qualify as either a U.S. citizen, a U.S. National, a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., a Person Admitted into the U.S. as an Asylee or Refugee., a National of a country that is not prohibited from having access to U.S. controlled technology (via a letter of assurance), or a Person to be approved for an export license by the governing agency whose technology comes under its jurisdiction. Please understand that any job offer that requires approval of an export license will be conditional on Materion's determination that it will be able to obtain an export license in a time frame consistent with Materion's business requirements.
