Job description

 Come Join Us!
“We want to build an organization where everyone loves their job and their leaders care for them.”
Over the last 30 years, TULLOCH has built a robust multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm recognized Canada-wide for its strengths in the diverse service offerings and commitment to excellence. TULLOCH’s innovative use of emerging technologies to improve both the efficiency and quality of work is core to everything TULLOCH. This approach, along with our extreme work ethic, makes us a service provider of choice for many clients.
Based in Sudbury, ON, the Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee will report to the Environmental Department Lead and will have a core range of duties which focus on water treatment in a mining environment. Other work elements will include sampling, minor maintenance, reagent inventory monitoring, and safety inspections. The plant does not require a certified operator. You will be part of a team that provides treatment, care, and maintenance to a growing number of inactive and/or reactivating mine sites in the private sectors. This is a new position. The base hourly wage range for this position is $24.00 - $27.00.
What You’ll Do:
The work described below occurs at a controlled mine site where safety is strictly enforced. You will:

  • Attend the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) on a regular schedule ensuring that systems and effluent remain within release parameters
  • Perform routine sampling of both process and designated environmental samples.
  • Deliver samples to the lab
  • Maintain reagent inventories
  • Perform daily inspection of system equipment including calibration of meters
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of the WTP
  • Support and assist with research and procurement of equipment and supplier information, as requested
  • Record and report daily activities
  • Liaise with cross shifts, owners, and supervisors to define work and ensure expectations are met
  • Perform frontline monitoring work at the WTP, supported and managed by a distributed team consisting of the owner, TULLOCH, and other personnel
  • When the plant is not active, there may be opportunities to support other operations and environmental project work.
Please note that this job description is not meant to be an all-inclusive statement of every duty and responsibility that will ever be required of an employee in the job.
What You Should Bring:
The WTP Operator Trainee role is designed for a responsible, hazard-averse individual who will take ownership of the process and be actively engaged with both TULLOCH and WTP owners to continually improve the reliability of the process to produce compliant water. Because of the environmental significance of non-compliance, the level of responsibility and ownership of the process will be a gradual transition as capability is demonstrated.
You must be able to:

  • Demonstrate reliability and responsibility
  • Comfortably lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Climb ladders for inspections
  • Safely work around typical water treatment chemicals (wear a mask as required)

Additionally, you should bring:

  • Some awareness of a mine site operating environment (in related roles, preference for consulting experience)
  • General knowledge of water chemistry
  • High motivation with results-oriented focus
  • Superior organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Unwavering commitment to health and safety in the workplace
  • Ability in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Valid Class G driver’s license
  • Your own cell phone (preferable)

You will be instructed further in:

  • An understanding of pump systems and water management
  • Chemical reagents – hazards and safety measures
  • PPE for known hazards
  • Sampling procedures and chain of custody for sample management
  • Recording of routine performance measurements
  • Corrective actions to manipulate the various treatment systems

Who You Are:

  • You are comfortable working in and around water, in remote areas, in all weather conditions, and at night
  • You are always keen to try something new
  • You work hard until the job is done
  • You go where others will not or cannot because you love a challenge
  • You are trusted with the freedom and responsibility to work independently while contributing to overall team success

What We Offer You:
TULLOCH has built a passionate workforce with a strong and vibrant culture which has been the key to our success. We offer programs and rewards that one would expect from a highly successful, established, and growing engineering company:

  • Competitive salary, benefits plan, and company pension plan
