Description (Open Recruitment) State Highway Administration Senior Lab Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician IV) Grade 14 (8449) SP# 26-73-03 YOU MUST APPLY ONLINE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION http://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/mdotmd **Previous Applicants Need Not Reapply** The State Highway Administration's (SHA) Office of Materials Technology (Anne Arundel County) is currently recruiting for a Senior Lab Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician IV) position. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies in this classification

Nature of Work: This position is a senior technician in the structural materials lab, performing a variety of engineering support tasks within the Structural Materials Team. Specific duties include advanced testing and evaluations of various structural materials, such as reinforcing steel, anchor bolts, neoprene rubber, nuts, washers, bricks, concrete blocks, welded materials, timber, sign materials, creating and maintaining computer databases, etc. The Senior Lab Technician will have the ability to apply specifications and test procedures to assess compliance with State Highway Administration (SHA), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications is required.

This position will help ensure operations comply with SHA safety protocols. The incumbent in this position will provide quality control oversight of the laboratory functions and equipment to ensure compliance with AASHTO R-18 accreditation requirements. This position will assist the testing of Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) and AASHTO resource test samples yearly.

Also, this position will assist the Team Leader in development of equipment and training budgets. The Senior Lab Technician will assist in nationwide inspection contract assignment database and authorizations and assist in instructing and training lower-level technicians in performing testing according to AASHTO, ASTM, and SHA specifications and standards. This position must have the ability to maintain a variety of technical records and adapt record systems for computerization.

This position will conduct basic and advanced localized material inspections and material sampling at fabrication and coatings facilities. The incumbent in this position will review material sources submitted into the Materials Management System (MMS) for accuracy and assist in conducting annual quality assurance facility audits and review of quality control plans. They will also assist in technical reviews of monthly inspection contract invoices.

The Senior Lab Technician will establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, customers, and the public. This position is expected to be able to communicate effectively and physically perform essential duties (i.e., lifting to 50 pounds, etc.). This position will be expected to perform most work independently, with minimal guidance from the Team Leader

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate should possess the following: Experience in data entry and the use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and/or Access Experience in performing field data collection, data review & analysis or construction inspection & testing Knowledge of the principles of basic mathematics and ability to perform basic mathematical computations Basic knowledge of computers and ability to learn basic functions on computer and keyboard Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and in a team setting Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public Notes: 1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience. 2.
