What is a Reproductive Biology job?

A Reproductive Biology job involves studying and researching the biological and physiological aspects of reproduction in humans, animals, and plants. Professionals in this field work in research labs, fertility clinics, universities, and biotechnology companies, focusing on areas such as reproductive health, fertility treatments, and developmental biology. They may conduct experiments, analyze genetic data, or develop technologies to assist reproduction. Careers in this field include reproductive biologists, embryologists, and fertility specialists, contributing to advancements in reproductive medicine and science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Reproductive Biology position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Reproductive Biology, you need a strong background in biological sciences, laboratory research techniques, and typically a relevant advanced degree such as a Master's or Ph.D. in biology or a related field. Competence with laboratory equipment, molecular biology tools, and data analysis software like PCR, flow cytometry, and bioinformatics platforms is often required. Excellent analytical thinking, collaboration, and strong communication skills will help you excel in multidisciplinary research teams. These abilities are vital for producing accurate research, advancing scientific understanding, and effectively translating findings into practical reproductive health solutions.

What are the typical responsibilities of someone working in Reproductive Biology?

Professionals in Reproductive Biology are typically involved in designing and conducting laboratory experiments to study reproductive processes, fertility, and related health issues. Their day-to-day activities may include collecting and analyzing biological samples, maintaining laboratory records, writing research reports, and presenting findings to peers or stakeholders. Collaboration is common, as they often work closely with interdisciplinary teams that may include other scientists, clinicians, or industry partners. This role can provide opportunities for career advancement, such as moving into senior research, academic, or clinical leadership positions as you gain expertise and experience.

Job description

Description
A postdoctoral training position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Haiqi Chen in the Cecil H. and Ida Green Center for Reproductive Biology Sciences at UT Southwestern Medical Center to study gene regulation using the mammalian reproductive organs as model systems. Our laboratory has several exciting projects related to two major themes. (1) We develop next-generation spatial and functional genomics technologies broadly applicable to studying gene regulation/functions in various biological systems in situ by combining techniques such as gene editing, high-resolution single-molecule imaging, and next-generation sequencing (NGS); (2) We apply these cutting-edge technologies, along with data science approaches to study mammalian reproduction, fertility, and transgenerational inheritance.
Postdoctoral scholars will work at the intersection of reproductive biology, genetics/genomics, and bioinformatics, and will have ample opportunities to learn and build upon the latest methods in spatial transcriptomics and epigenomics, single-cell sequencing, genome engineering, and various functional assays.
Information on our postdoctoral training program, benefits, and a virtual tour can be found at http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/postdocs
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a recent Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree. Experience in any of the following areas: molecular and cell biology, animal models, molecular imaging, and various NGS assays (e.g., RNA-seq or ATAC-seq) leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals is recommended. Experience in NGS data analysis is a plus but not required.
Application Instructions
Interested individuals must upload a CV, a cover letter, and a list of three references.
