Lab Support Services Technician – Specimen Processing

Responsible for the receipt, accessioning, processing, and distribution of laboratory specimens for all patient populations. Ensures specimens are accurately identified, labeled, prepared, and routed according to test requirements and laboratory protocols. Utilizes laboratory systems to monitor incoming specimens, prioritize workflow, and track pending or delayed samples. Applies critical thinking and problem-solving skills when identifying specimen discrepancies, integrity issues, or special handling requirements.

Interacts with phlebotomy staff, nursing staff, providers, couriers, reference laboratories, and other hospital personnel to resolve specimen-related issues and ensure timely, accurate testing. Maintains a high level of attention to detail to support quality patient care and laboratory operations.

Adheres to all local, state, and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and institutional policies and procedures to ensure specimen integrity, patient safety, and confidentiality.

Skills/Knowledge:

  1. Ability to perform job duties and assigned tasks with accuracy, reliability, and precision.
  2. Ability to organize and prioritize workload to meet established turnaround times and testing deadlines.
  3. Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with laboratory staff and clinical partners to resolve specimen issues.
  4. Ability to maintain attention to detail while performing repetitive tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Workflow Management

Ability to appropriately respond to:

  1. fluctuations in specimen volume,
  2. unexpected situations or problems such as equipment, courier delays, or system failures,
  3. shift-to-shift hand-offs and continuity of workflow,
  4. STAT and time-sensitive specimen processing requirements,
  5. specimen integrity issues that exceed acceptable thresholds (e.g., labeling discrepancies, insufficient volume, improper collection, or transport).
  6. performs urine drug screen collection and breathalyzer testing on clients requiring this testing. Will be required to attend classes to pass this certification.

Career Growth:

This position offers opportunities for professional development and career advancement within Lab Support Services. Co-workers are required to complete Laboratory Support Services training and classes within the first year of employment. Upon successful completion, the co-worker will be promoted to a Lab Assistant role and receive a corresponding pay increase.

Lab Assistants may further expand their skill set through additional training and experience, with opportunities to pursue advanced laboratory career path based on departmental needs, role requirements, and individual performance.
