The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Supports the day-to-day work and functions as a medical technologist. Under general direction from the department leadership, participates in the management of the technical, administrative, financial, quality, and personnel management functions of the laboratory section. Provides technical support and supervision of daily technical workflow and operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs bench work as needed. Enforces environmental and safety procedures. Oversees and sets goals for training and laboratory personnel on safety issues. Oversees and maintains weekly stock inventory, including distillation of chemicals. Ensures instrumentation, equipment and supplies are in good working order. Arranges for additional maintenance service as needed.
  • Ensures adequate staffing schedules for department specific assignments to meet demands of priority processing and required turnaround times. Assists in the development and evaluation of new policies and procedures. Recommends modifications to policies and procedures as needed. Implements and enforces all current laboratory policies, including proper adherence to standardized methods of assay, discipline, schedules, safety standards, professional conduct, evaluation and reporting of laboratory results, preventive maintenance procedures and records, laboratory housekeeping, supply inventories, patient rights and well-being, quality assurance, and professional conduct. Communicates problems to laboratory leadership.
  • Maintains quality control over laboratory section, including proficiency testing. Reviews data and results generated in laboratory area for general correctness and analytic reliability and collaborates with team to review final reports prior to release to the physician or for inclusion in permanent medical records. Maintains variance log for laboratory staff.
  • Maintains training and competency protocol and participates in resident training. Provides training to new staff members. Has accountability for the professional conduct and technical performance of staff members in designated laboratory section. Participates in the interview and recruitment process and recommends personnel actions, including promotions, disciplinary actions and terminations in consultation with HR Business Partner. Assists leadership with performance evaluations, including tracking and maintaining competency files for staff members. Provides daily counseling and feedback.
  • Participates in and coordinates others in special projects. Works on annual operation and capital budget, as needed. Responds to variance queries. Participates in selection and purchasing of new equipment or software. Oversees and assists in updating methodologies, evaluation of instrumentation and software, and development of new assays.
  • Other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or related field and 4 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Post-licensure required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Highly organized and ability to multi-task, attention to detail preferred


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • NYS Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist upon hire required
