The School of Medicine and Health Sciences at George Washington University seeks a dedicated and versatile part-time Laboratory Associate for the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Med program (PBPM) based on the Virginia Science and Technology Campus (VSTC). This position reports directly to the Program Director (PBPM) and will assist in biology, anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry, and physics labs for pre-medical students, manage laboratory operations, and support departmental initiatives, including participation on the PBPM Admissions Committee. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting high-quality instruction, ensuring safety of students and faculty in the lab, fostering an engaging and inclusive learning environment, and contributing to the academic success of students pursuing careers in healthcare and related fields. The program is a in person program, and requires in-person support Monday through Thursday, with possibility of remote work on Friday. Additionally, there is the potential to obtain a voluntary adjunct faculty position in the Department of PA Studies associated with this position.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Laboratory Management and Safety
  • Documents emergency responses when necessary and ensures compliance with the nationally accepted standards of clean room operations and cleanroom best practices as well as maintaining the overall cleanliness of laboratories.
  • Oversee inventory, purchasing, and storage of supplies, reagents, and specimens.
  • Supervises students who come to the lab to develop skills.
  • Ensure proper use, maintenance, and repairs of lab equipment and instruments.
  • Completes eye wash station checks, chem waste disposal center and lab room inspection logs.
  • Identifies, manages and maintains equipment purchases.
  • Processes bids and purchasing orders for equipment, supplies, reagents and media.
  • Coordinates and manages laboratory space for teaching and research purposes.
  • Enforce and train students and staff on biological and chemical safety practices following OSHA, CFR and other institutional guidelines.
  • Manage the disposal of hazardous biological and chemical waste in collaboration with safety officers.

2. Administrative and Curriculum Support
  • Assist core faculty with course preparation, including copying, grading, and proctoring exams.
  • Manage course materials on Blackboard and other learning platforms.
  • Oversee teaching assistants as they support lab instructional goals.
  • Contribute to curricular innovation by serving as a safety expert when faculty propose new lab experiments.
  • Maintain annual laboratory budget and produce annual reports.

3. Departmental Service
  • Serve on the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Med Admissions Committee.
  • Participate in faculty and staff meetings and professional development activities.
  • Assist with student recruitment and outreach efforts.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline, plus 2 years of relevant professional experience or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

  • Proficiency in laboratory management, safety protocols, and instructional technologies is highly desired.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and mentoring skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.
  • Excellent skills operating a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and Banner is preferred.
  • Master's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, or a related field, and have completed laboratory-based courses in anatomy and physiology, biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment such as virtual dissection platforms (e.g., Anatomage), NMR machines is desired.
  • Experience managing educational labs and developing laboratory materials for basic sciences courses such as biology, chemistry and physics is highly desired.
  • Certification in laboratory safety or hazardous materials handling is highly preferred.
