Description
The Monell Chemical Senses Center was founded in 1968 as the world's first nonprofit scientific institute devoted exclusively to basic research on the chemical senses: taste, smell, and chemosensory irritation. Research at Monell contributes to a wide range of scientific and practical knowledge. With more than fifty Ph.D.-level scientists, the Center is making major progress toward understanding how the chemical senses function and their importance in everyday life. The Bolding Lab is seeking a Lab Manager to provide administrative support for our research into sensory processing and information storage in the olfactory system. We use large-scale in vivo electrophysiology, calcium imaging, optogenetics, and quantitative behavioral analysis to understand the neural basis of olfactory memory. The core responsibilities include ordering laboratory supplies and equipment, preparing solutions and setting up equipment for experiments, maintaining transgenic mouse lines, stereotaxic animal surgery and postoperative care, and conducting behavioral experiments. Additional opportunities are available to develop novel techniques, engage in statistical analysis of neural and behavioral data, compile and present data, and network with the broader neuroscience community. Key responsibilities include:
Systems Neuroscience Techniques:
  • Perform established experimental procedures and operate a variety of scientific equipment
  • Tissue processing and histological procedures
  • Stereotaxic surgeries and injection of viral constructs in laboratory animals
  • Carry out behavioral experiments and analysis
  • Neural and behavioral data processing

Lab Support:
  • Help manage laboratory mouse colony, including meticulously maintaining breeding and genotyping records
  • Inventory and ordering of lab supplies
  • Stocking and organizing incoming lab supplies
  • Preparing odors and other materials for experiments
  • Laboratory equipment cleaning and maintenance
  • Other support duties related to lab operations as needed

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Neuroscience or related field
  • Highly engaged by systems neuroscience research and a strong interest in the questions our lab is pursuing
  • Ability to handle and work with laboratory animals
  • Excellent troubleshooting / problem solving in complex systems
  • Previous experience with systems neuroscience research is strongly preferred
  • Experience with multivariate statistics, machine learning, Python, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi are valued
