Job description

Company Description
Mountville Rubber Company is a custom rubber mixing business that provides internal and external customers with 45 million pounds of uncured rubber across several industries from two manufacturing facilities in LaGrange, GA. Annual sales in 2024 totaled $60,000,000.
Position Summary
The Quality Lab Technician performs physical testing and quality verification on rubber compounds to confirm every batch meets customer and company specifications before it ships. A successful Quality Lab Technician works safely and precisely in the lab, follows testing and documentation protocols exactly, and makes decisions grounded in Mountville's core values - Do the Right Thing, Do What Is Best for the Customer, and Drive Improvements and Innovation. Protecting the customer is central to this role: every Moving Die Rheometer (MDR) and physical test result must accurately reflect the product and match the customer's specified requirements before release. This role is proficient in Microsoft applications and supports continuous improvement of lab and testing processes. Reports to the Quality Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Do the Right Thing
  • Follow all lab safety protocols and PPE requirements when handling samples, chemicals, and testing equipment.
  • Record and report test results honestly and completely, never altering, rounding favorably, or omitting a result to make a batch appear compliant.
  • Immediately flag and quarantine any batch with results outside specification rather than allowing it to move forward.
  • Adhere strictly to documented testing methods, calibration schedules, and company policy on every sample.

Do What Is Best for the Customer
  • Verify that every MDR accurately and completely reflects the physical test results for that batch before it is issued.
  • Confirm physical test results (e.g., viscosity, cure, tensile, hardness, and other specified properties) match the customer's specified requirements before any product is released or shipped.
  • Treat any mismatch between test results and customer specifications as a hold condition and escalate to Production and the Quality Manager immediately rather than releasing the batch.
  • Maintain accurate, traceable testing and MDR records so customer requirements can be verified and audited at any time.
  • Communicate proactively with production, quality and research and development when results are trending toward a customer's specification limits.

Drive Improvements and Innovation
  • Support continuous improvement projects that increase testing accuracy, throughput, or repeatability.
  • Help identify and correct root causes when physical test results or MDRs reveal recurring quality gaps.
  • Use Microsoft applications, Alpha Enterprise track testing data, MDR completion, and trends against customer specifications.
  • Recommend improvements to test methods, equipment, or documentation that reduce risk of a customer receiving out-of-spec material.

Reporting Relationship
This position reports to the Quality Manager.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in chemistry, materials science, or a related field preferred.
  • 1+ years of laboratory, quality, or manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications.
  • High attention to detail and strong record-keeping skills; comfortable working with customer specifications and test tolerances.
  • Ability to recognize out-of-specification results and follow hold/escalation procedures without exception.
Working Conditions
In addition to office and lab work, this position requires time in a manufacturing environment where personal protective equipment is necessary.
Compensation & Benefits
Pay Range $18-$20 (based on experience).
Mountville Rubber Company offers a comprehensive benefits package consisting of medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, along with participation in our 401(k) and profit-sharing programs.
Equal Opportunity Employer
This employer is required to notify all applicants of their rights pursuant to federal employment laws. For further information, please review the Know Your Rights notice from the Department of Labor.
