Job Title: Medical Lab Scientist IIJob Description

The Medical Lab Scientist II performs routine and complex clinical laboratory testing to support accurate diagnosis and quality patient care. This role functions as a generalist in a core laboratory setting, working across chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, and related disciplines, with the opportunity to utilize blood bank experience. The position involves independent technical work, collaboration within a team, and careful adherence to established laboratory standards and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria and departmental standards.
  • Perform routine and complex technical procedures following departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments to ensure proper functionality and minimize downtime.
  • Make sound technical decisions regarding testing, including problem solving and resolution of testing issues.
  • Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents and controls to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Report accurate and timely test results to support high-quality patient care and clinical decision-making.
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures on all assigned instruments and systems.
  • Identify, monitor, and replenish testing bench supplies to maintain continuous laboratory operations.
  • Assist with specimen processing as needed to support workflow and turnaround time requirements.
  • Work as a generalist in the core laboratory, including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation testing.
  • Run laboratory instruments, perform quality control, and conduct routine maintenance in accordance with laboratory policies.
  • Utilize blood bank skills when applicable; blood bank experience is considered a significant advantage.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following safety protocols and consistently wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Use laboratory information systems and computer applications to manage orders, results, and documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and other healthcare professionals to coordinate testing and resolve issues.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by working overtime or alternative shifts as needed to meet business and patient care needs.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or other qualification that meets applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Minimum 2–4 years of clinical laboratory testing experience.
  • Eligibility for or possession of a state Medical Technologist license if required by local regulations.
  • ASCP or AMT certification preferred or required depending on specific role requirements.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency with computers and familiarity with laboratory information systems.
  • High level of attention to detail with strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a standardized color vision screen.
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs.
  • Hands-on experience as a generalist in a core laboratory, including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation testing.
  • Experience running laboratory instruments, performing quality control, and conducting routine maintenance.
  • 2–4 years of medical laboratory testing experience in a clinical setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Blood bank experience is a strong plus and highly valued.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution.
  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science from an accredited college or university with at least 1 year of training or experience in the specialty in which testing will be performed, equivalent to that received in a school of Medical Technology.
  • Completion of at least 90 semester hours from an accredited institution, including 16 semester hours of biology courses, 16 semester hours of chemistry courses (with at least 6 hours of inorganic chemistry), and 3 semester hours of mathematics, along with completion of an accredited clinical laboratory training program or 1 year of documented clinical laboratory training or experience in the specialty in which testing will be performed.
  • Associate’s Degree in Medical Technology from an accredited institution.
  • Familiarity with generalist core lab operations, including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, instrument operation, quality control, and maintenance.
Work Environment

This role is based in a hospital laboratory environment, working primarily in a core lab setting that includes chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation testing. The position follows a third-shift schedule from 11:00 p.m. to 9:30 a.m., providing critical overnight and early morning laboratory support. The laboratory uses a range of modern instruments and laboratory information systems, and requires consistent use of appropriate personal protective equipment. The environment emphasizes safety, accuracy, and collaboration among laboratory professionals. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $39.18 - $39.18/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
