Job description

PeaceHealth is seeking a Lab Assistant Technical for a Per Diem/Relief, Variable position.
The salary range for this job opening at PeaceHealth is $23.53 - $35.31.
The hiring rate is dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to education, training, work experience, terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement, seniority, etc.
Job Summary
Performs laboratory testing and support services across the major areas of the laboratory. Performs moderate to high complexity laboratory procedures, as defined by CLIA, according to standard operating procedures. This testing requires the limited exercise of independent judgment and interpretation and is performed under the supervision of a medical technologist or department supervisor.
Essential Functions
  • Perform phlebotomy and specimen processing as necessary.
  • Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis.
  • Performs moderate complexity or waived tests, as assigned. Recognizes abnormal results and follows up as defined in standard operating procedures.
  • Operates instruments as assigned. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and notifies appropriate technical personnel.
  • Performs routine quality control and maintains accurate records. Recognizes out-of-control results and notifies technical personnel.
  • Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results and takes appropriate action according to predetermined protocols.
  • Assists in the training of new caregivers and students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma Required: or equivalent and
  • Associate Degree Preferred: or
  • Bachelor of Science Preferred:

  • Preferred: Clinical Laboratory experience and
  • Preferred: Phlebotomy training or experience preferred for all critical access locations

Skills
  • Working knowledge of specimen collection, preparation, and test requirements and factors affecting test interpretation in responding to inquiries (Required)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills (Required)
  • Mathematical ability to calculate fractions, percentages, ratios, proportion measurements and apply practical algebra (Required)
  • General understanding of laboratory equipment to calibrate and do minor repairs (Required)

Department / Location Specific Notes
University District Lab, Cottage Grove Lab, Florence Lab, United General Medical Center, Peace Island Medical Center and Ketchikan:
  • Six months phlebotomy experience preferred or completion of phlebotomy program preferred.

Working Conditions
  • Ability to move around area with occasional sitting.
  • Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment, frequently.
  • Lift/Carry: Frequently up to 5 lbs.
  • Push/Pull: Frequently up to 10 lbs. force.
  • Reaching frequently.
  • Squat/ kneel occasionally.
  • Environmental Conditions

  • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.

  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
