Job description

Reports to Manager. Examines and tests human specimens to obtain information for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients. Maintains daily patient log and enters test results on forms, properly logging all blood samples and urine drug screens. Maintains equipment, keeps inventory and orders supplies, maintains cleanliness of laboratory using Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.

Analysis/Testing

  • Examines and tests human specimens to obtain information for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients.
  • Receives and collects specimens for lab testing by drawing blood and collecting urine from patients.
  • Performs blood analysis in chemistry, hematology, immunology and general lab as ordered by physicians.

  • Keeps lab manual up to date.
  • Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in same manner as patient samples.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from specifications.

Education/Training

  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Maintains professional affiliation and licensure.

Supplies and Maintenance

  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
  • Keeps inventory and orders supplies.
  • Maintains cleanliness of laboratory, cleaning spills using precautions and contaminated waste disposal per OSHA guidelines.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; correcting problems or immediately notifying practice manager.
  • Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department
  • Completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of some college or vocational training. ASCP, NCA or equivalent certification is required. Up to 1 year experience is required. Related medical laboratory experience preferred.

  • Requires in-depth knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory equipment and testing to perform lab tests, quality control checks and maintain instrumentation and skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
