Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)

Site: Columbia VA Healthcare System (CVAHCS)

Location: 6439 Garners Ferry Rd, Columbia, SC 29209

Duration: 1 year contract with the possibility of 4 years extension

Shift Schedule (Mon–Fri + Weekends + Federal Holidays):

  • First Shift: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

  • Second Shift: 4:00 PM – Midnight

  • Third Shift: Midnight – 8:00 AM

How Many Shifts Needed Per Month: All three shifts covered 7 days/week including Federal holidays (~867 hours/month across all shifts for 5 FTEs)

Credentialing / Onboarding Time: 6 to 8 weeks

Certifications: ASCP or AMT certification (or equivalent MLT/MLS/CLS certification) required.

Education: Associate’s degree (or higher) in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory, or related field from an accredited institution

Experience Needed: Minimum 2 years as a generalist MLT with hands-on experience across all five disciplines (Chemistry, Blood Bank, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology) and proficient phlebotomy/venipuncture experience required

Special Skills Needed:

  • Ability to work as a generalist across all lab areas (Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis)

  • Strong technical proficiency and competency validation

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English

  • Knowledge of lab safety, infection control, and quality standards

  • Ability to maintain certifications and complete CEUs

Responsibilities:

  • Perform accurate laboratory testing across Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, and Microbiology

  • Perform venipuncture/phlebotomy; collect, process, and label specimens using two patient identifiers per laboratory policy

  • Perform and document QC, instrument calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting

  • Report patient results accurately; identify and call all critical/abnormal values to ordering providers with documented read-back

  • Maintain ≥95% turnaround time compliance for STAT and routine testing

  • Enter Point-of-Care test results; verify QC and lot/expiration dates prior to resulting

  • Utilize VA VISTA, VBECS, and CPRS systems; follow downtime contingency procedures

  • Complete and maintain competency records and required CEUs

  • Attend monthly lab staff meetings; submit weekly timesheets and monthly activity reports to COR

  • Complete annual mandatory training (Privacy/HIPAA and Rules of Behavior) prior to network access

  • Comply with all VA, OSHA, Joint Commission, CAP, AABB, and FDA standards
