Job description


Performs blood specimen collection, specimen receipt and distribution of laboratory specimens; will perform CLIA waived laboratory tests, as requested. Will process anatomic pathology and cytology specimens; assists pathologists and histotechs, as needed. Will supervise or lead lab assistant I and II positions, as requested.
Completes prioritization, receipt, registration and distribution of specimens. Has responsibility for sendout/reference lab shipping, tracking and billing. Will perform waived testing, as requested. Will assist with processing of anatomic pathology specimens including preparation of microscopic tissue slides, staining and specimen management, as requested
Responsibilities
  • Interpersonal skills to interact in a professional and competent manner using effective listening, verbal and written communications with patients, clients, laboratory colleagues and other healthcare professionals
  • Service orientation actively looking for ways to care through respect, courtesy, empathy and warmth when communicating with patients and clients

  • Operate basic laboratory equipment, computers and medical software

  • Attention to detail to verify relevant data and process specimens ensuring appropriate specimens are handled, packaged and shipped to the designated laboratory according to established protocols and specimen integrity
  • Understands the pre-analytical variables that affect laboratory specimens
  • Correct application of laboratory medical terminology and measurements
  • Organizational, planning, and prioritization skills to handle multiple tasks and accomplish work accurately and timely
  • Demonstrates problem solving by taking the appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns
  • Capable of handling multiple priorities in a high volume setting

Qualifications
  • Minimum Requirements
    • Experience: 1 year of laboratory experience and/or completion of a formal phlebotomy training program.
    • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Certifications: Phlebotomy Certification where state law requires.
  • Preferred Requirements
    • Experience: Basic laboratory computer/lab information system experience preferred.
    • Education: Associates degree in laboratory or medical related field from an accredited institution preferred.
    • Certifications: Completion of formal phlebotomy training program and/or national phlebotomy certification through ASCP, ANP, ASPT or similar preferred
