Summary:
Prepares specimens for analysis by registering and accessioning orders via Hospital Information System and Laboratory Information Systems (clinical lab and/or anatomic pathology), verifying specimen acceptability. Performs established pre-analytical and analytical laboratory procedures, not requiring Medical Technologist or Histology Technologist interpretation, in accordance with established laboratory policy in an accurate, safe, and timely manner.
Responsibilities:
Assists in the preparation and processing of bone marrow specimens.Provides support functions to technologists including the loading and maintaining of instruments, making up of reagents, thawing, pooling, importing, and issuing of blood products, and maintenance and function checks. Keeps appropriate persons informed of instrument problems and resolutions.Operates, maintains, and repairs clinical laboratory equipment within the scope of training including waived testing, routine preventative maintenance, calibrations, quality control and safety checks.Provides laboratory customer service to include request for add-ons, specimen collection information, phlebotomy requests, result inquiry, etc.Completes culture setup of microbiology samples and gram stain preparation when staffed in Microbiology department.Performs the phlebotomy function to ensure accurate and timely processing of lab test orders.Performs clerical duties. Also maintains equipment and adequate stock of supplies. Maintains work area in a safe, aseptic and organized manner.Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing and transporting specimens.

Required Work Experience: Six (6) months of prior experience as a lab assistant.
Other Information: Certification in Phlebotomy is preferred.
