Job Description
Overview
A Specimen Processor I prepares and handles specimens received for testing. Specimen Processors will work with management and quality team members to ensure laboratory activities are defined, documented, and completed to support inspection readiness. They will also ensure compliance is maintained through procedures, training, and documentation.
Shift: Tuesday-Saturday 9:00am-5:30pm
Pay: Starting at $23/hr, plus an additional $3/hr on Saturday
Responsibility
  1. Works under the direct supervision of an employee or supervisor who is trained and competent in all relative procedures and processes pertaining to accessioning as well as other assigned processes.
  2. Prepares and handles specimens for testing:
    1. Assigns specimens an internal tracking number (accession ID).
    2. Compares and verifies identifiers on specimens match test order.
    3. Ensures specimens are labeled appropriately.
    4. Communicates important information pertaining to testing.
    5. Looks for and documents problems with specimens.
    6. Scans, files, and electronically saves paperwork received with specimens.
    7. Files and temporary stores specimens until test release.
    8. Transports specimens to testing labs.
    9. Packages specimens for return, or external/internal lab send out.
    10. Performs other duties as assigned.
  3. Complies with and maintains competency in all assigned laboratory policies and procedures.
  4. Observes all compliance and regulatory requirements, particularly those associated to data security and patient confidentiality.
  5. Actively participates in and maintains accepted laboratory standards for continuing education.
  6. Maintains ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with co-workers and other staff.
  7. Plays an active role within the team and helps to create a positive work environment. This includes participating in team building events and communicating positively with others.
  8. Arrives to work on time and is regular in attendance.
  9. Meets productivity and quality standards/rates set by the department and lab operations.
  10. Works with team members to resolve department problems and help implement improvement projects.
  11. Supports leadership by providing feedback to better support the team and needs of the department. This includes responding to department and company surveys.
Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  2. Data entry experience preferred.
  3. Excellent organizational, communication, multitasking and teamwork skills.
  4. Detail oriented with the ability to multitask.
  5. Basic computer knowledge needed.

Physical Requirements
Lifting Requirements: Medium work or exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force consistently.
Physical Requirements: Stationary positioning, moving, operating, ascending/descending, communicating, observing, reaching, and repetitive motion. Use of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential job functions.
Hazards and Atmospheric Conditions: Exposure to fumes, dust, extreme temperatures, wet and/or humidity, noise, vibration, mists or gases, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and radiant energy hazards.
OSHA Category I: Duties performed routinely requires exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue.
