Job description

Job Summary: Working under the direction and supervision of the Laboratory Services Manager, the Lab Assistant II conducts day-to-day activities related to laboratory operations.


Schedule: Monday–Friday, 10:30 am–7:00 pm (Day Shift)


Duties and Responsibilities

Specimen Intake & Processing

o    Accessions cases and enters patient demographics and specimen information into the laboratory

information system.

o    Assists the pathology grossing assistant.

o    Performs routine stains and cover slips slides by hand and using automated equipment.


Documentation & Reporting

o    Transcribe gross and microscopic descriptions.

o    Print and distribute pathology laboratory reports and mails patient letters.

o    Sends pathology materials out for outside review and ancillary testing.


Facility & Equipment Upkeep

o    Maintains files of pathology materials, reagents, and equipment.

o    Disposes of biohazardous and other hazardous waste.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

o    Basic understanding of medical terminology and human anatomy.

o    Accurate typing speed of at least 40 wpm.

o    Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

o    Ability to follow established procedures accurately and independently, prioritize work, and identify and report problems.


Credentials and Experience

o    Minimum of 60 semester units of college coursework required, including 6 units of chemistry, 6

units of biology, and 12 lab units.

o    Related laboratory experience a plus.
