The 61st Street Service Corporation, provides administrative and clinical support staff for ColumbiaDoctors. This position will support ColumbiaDoctors, one of the largest multi-specialty practices in the Northeast. ColumbiaDoctors practices comprise an experienced group of more than 2,800 physicians, surgeons, dentists, and nurses, offering more than 240 specialties and subspecialties.

Job Summary:

The Laboratory Aide is a key support member in the workflow of the Dermatopathology Laboratory and functions as a team player to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and timely processing of all histology and digital pathology tasks. The candidate will work closely with the Histotechnologists, Digital Imaging Coordinator, and Shift Supervisor. The Laboratory Aide is responsible for accessioning, labeling, filing, writing slides, discarding old specimen samples, and retrieving deeper levels and special requests from Pathologists. In addition, the Laboratory Aide supports the digital pathology workflow by preparing slides for scanning, assisting with slide organization for the scanners, ensuring accurate barcode readability, and coordinating with the Digital Pathology team to maintain smooth image capture and transfer into the LIS.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Accessioning: Data entry of all cases into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) with the highest degree of accuracy to ensure patient information and referring physician information is correct. Must conform to all applicable HIPAA and Billing compliance during the accessioning process
  • Receiving: Responsible for receiving a large volume of biopsies from multiple couriers and ensure all biopsies are accounted for in accordance with the departmental manifest
    • Report any discrepancies to the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager or Administrator
  • Filing: Performs daily filing of all blocks and slides and scheduled retrieval of blocks and slides from our off-site warehouse
  • Waste and specimen disposal: Disposes reagent waste and old specimens in compliance with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety and laboratory protocols
  • Digital Pathtology:
    • Support the dermatopathology laboratorys digital pathology operations by creating high-quality digital images of glass slides,
    • Ensure accuracy of slide labeling and barcode capture, and performing QC checks across all digital imaging workflows.
    • Maintain seamless scanner performance, assisting with data collection, and ensure images transfer accurately into the laboratory information system (LIS).
    • Work closely with the Digital Pathology team, histotechnologists, supervisors, and leadership to ensure digital imaging meets clinical, operational, and regulatory expectations.
  • Case Coordination: Retrieves Pathologists requests for additional or special testing
    • Writes the slides for all additional and special stains
    • Prints reports for all the additional and special stains to be provided to the Pathologist
    • Assists in maintaining daily log of the number of cases cut per Histotech
    • Assists in the transport of additional cases and special stains from the Microtomy area to the Staining Area.
  • Lab supply storage organization and inventory: Responsible for storing laboratory supplies and assists Supervisor in inventory control
  • Clerical:
    • Answers phones with professionalism
    • Liaison in the retrieval and delivery of requested slides, blocks, and requisitions with the front office
    • Scanning of daily requisitions
  • Compliance and Proficiency Testing: Performs all compliance training as required by the Department, Service Corp and the University; performs proficiency testing by the Department in compliance with the requirements set forth by the State Department of Health (NYBOH) and College of American Pathologists (CAP).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned based on operational needs and/or within the professional scope of practice/training/education.

Job Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • NSH Digital Pathology Certification is preferred or must be able to obtained.
  • Demonstrate organizational and problem-solving skills, and the ability to troubleshoot any clerical issues that might arise
  • Candidate must be able to learn how to operate the Laboratory Information System (LIS) used in the Department.
  • Candidate must be well organized and be able to manage a demanding workload and moderately complex cases in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ability to participate as a member of a team, including demonstrating reliability, punctuality, professionalism, respect and adaptability to new and changing situations.
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task.
  • Candidate must be able to work independently and accurately in a fast-paced, action-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally diverse staff demonstrating tact and sensitivity in stressful situations.
  • Working proficiency of Microsoft Office (Word & Excel) or similar software is required and an ability and willingness to learn new systems and programs.
  • Experience in a Histopathology and/or Immunohistochemistry lab is preferred.

Hourly Rate Ranges: $21.88 - $31.25

Note: Our salary offers will fall within these ranges based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to experience, skill set, training and education.
