OVERVIEW
The Council advises Commissioners and County staff on key agricultural matters, including education and policy, land use, and economic opportunities, while serving as a collaborative forum for stakeholders to shape the long-term sustainability and resilience of the County's agricultural community. The application will go through a process that includes review by a DCD Staff selection team then recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners, then official appointment by adopting a resolution.

Position Details
  • Farmer - Agricultural Producer
    Individuals with experience or interest in crops such as forages, sod, fruits, vegetables, flowers, seeds, grasses, trees, fiber, freshwater fish, apiaries, and more.
  • Farmer - Livestock
    Individuals with experience or interest in livestock including horses, cattle, sheep, goats, swine, reindeer, donkeys, mules, llamas, poultry, and ratites (e.g., emu).
  • Agricultural Specialist
    Individuals with expertise in areas such as value-added food production, animal nutrition, feed production, marketing, supply chain, finance, agricultural real estate, veterinary services, or agricultural education. Farmers are welcome to apply.
  • Youth Representative
    High school or college students with experience, interest, or education in any of the areas listed above.

Volunteer Duties
The Agriculture Advisory Council shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners and County staff. The Council's duties include:
  • Attend meetings to conduct business; keep up to date on county issues and circumstances, as well as local, state, and federal topics.
  • Provide recommendations on agricultural policies, land use, and regulations consistent with County code and state law.
  • Review reports, data, and planning initiatives affecting agriculture and identifying priorities, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Serve as a forum for stakeholders and public input on agricultural issues and land use compatibility.
  • Support outreach, education, and coordination with agencies and organizations that serve the agricultural community.
  • Collaborate to prepare and transmit reports, findings, and recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners and County staff.
  • Operate and conduct meetings in accordance with County code and state law.
Qualifications to Serve
  • All Council members shall be residents of Kitsap County or be active agricultural producers operating in Kitsap County.
  • Experience with agriculture production, livestock, and/or agriculture specialty as described in the openings section.
