The Market Grille Department Manager is the driving force behind one of the most dynamic departments in the store, setting the standard for customer service, team performance, food quality, and profitability. In this role, you'll lead a team, manage day-to-day operations, and work closely with store leadership to ensure the department runs at its best every single day.

What You'll Do

No two days are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Set and uphold department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance, and overall profitability

  • Lead by example, greeting customers warmly, learning their names, and creating a friendly, welcoming atmosphere throughout the department

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, discipline, and evaluate all department employees; approve employee discipline and recommend transfers, discharge, and salary increases

  • Determine department goals with the Store Director and establish weekly schedules and daily work plans

  • Inspect signage and displays for quality and quantity of merchandise and order product for replenishment

  • Figure retail pricing, extend and post invoices, and oversee department bookkeeping procedures

  • Analyze weekly and monthly sales trends, compare to actuals, prepare ad projections, and write ads

  • Plan displays, promotions, and pre-orders and conduct department inventory

  • Ensure proper temperatures and storage procedures are maintained to guarantee product freshness and control shrink

  • Understand and troubleshoot equipment and ensure maintenance is performed as needed

  • Work closely with Restaurant and Service staff and communicate sales ideas and updates to the team

  • Unload trucks, check in delivered merchandise, and place product in appropriate storage areas

  • Ensure competitive pricing in the market area and attend meetings, seminars, and continuing education as needed

  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

  • Lead and develop a team, maintaining high standards and a positive, energetic work environment

  • Solve practical problems and interpret instructions across a variety of situations with limited standardization

  • Compose original correspondence, interpret written work instructions, and follow technical manuals

  • Conduct job applicant interviews and make sound hiring decisions

  • Use math skills including fractions, decimals, and percentages for pricing, invoicing, and sales analysis

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with customers, employees, vendors, and store leadership

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home; Food Service Director

Direct Reports: Department Employees

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience required; sanitation coursework helpful

  • Over one year of related work experience required

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-paced role in a store kitchen and restaurant environment where you'll be leading a team throughout your shift. You'll have frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dampness, equipment movement hazards, and cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
