Junior Website Developer information

What is a junior website developer?

A Junior Website Developer is an entry-level professional who assists in creating, maintaining, and updating websites. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced developers and contribute to both front-end and back-end tasks, such as coding user interfaces, fixing bugs, and implementing new features. Junior Website Developers are often expected to have a basic understanding of programming languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and may also work with content management systems. Their role is ideal for those starting out in web development and looking to gain practical experience in the field.

What are the typical challenges a junior website developer might face in their first year on the job?

As a Junior Website Developer, you may encounter challenges such as adapting to new frameworks and coding standards, managing multiple projects with tight deadlines, and finding effective ways to debug and troubleshoot code. Collaboration with designers, senior developers, and project managers is common, so strong communication skills are essential. Over time, you'll gain confidence in using version control systems like Git and better understand best practices for responsive and accessible web design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior website developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Website Developer, you need foundational skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and an understanding of responsive design, usually supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic usage of content management systems (CMS), and exposure to frameworks such as React or Bootstrap are commonly expected. Problem-solving, attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure you can contribute to website projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate efficiently within development teams.

You'll take on meaningful design ownership, coordinate across disciplines, and see your work through construction—growing your technical depth and leadership while contributing to a diverse set of complex facility projects that make a real impact.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Produce and check drawings and models in Revit/AutoCAD; coordinate diligently with architectural, MEP, and site/civil teams for a fully integrated set.
  • Apply codes and standards (IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360) to ensure safe, constructible, and cost‑effective designs.
  • Support project planning—estimate level of effort, sequence design tasks, and help maintain scope, schedule, and quality commitments.

  • Engage during construction—review submittals/RFIs, conduct site observations, and document field findings that inform design improvements.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians through task guidance, model setup, and standards adoption.
  • Contribute to proposals (scope notes, resumes, past performance) and occasional client meetings to support team growth
Qualifications

You are passionate about:

  • Working collaboratively with others.
  • Having ownership in the work you do.
  • Using your talents to positively affect communities.

You bring to the team:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • 4 or more years of structural design experience on building projects.
  • Proficiency with Revit/AutoCAD and familiarity with structural analysis tools (e.g., RISA, STAAD, SAP2000/ETABS).
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes/standards (IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC).
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills; ability to lead tasks and mentor others.
