Junior Web Designer information

What Does a Junior Web Designer Do?

A junior web designer works with a senior web designer to create website templates and mock-ups. In this role, you meet with clients to determine what graphics, content, and design elements they want for their website and then work with developers to implement them. Your duties include creating wireframes to help build the optimal user experience, collaborating with product owners, ensuring the implementation of their ideas, conducting user research, and evaluating feedback. Other responsibilities include promoting design guidelines and maintaining best practices across platforms. You also design email blasts and presentations and collaborate with other designers.

Is web design still worth it in 2026?

Web design remains a valuable skill in 2026, as businesses continue to prioritize online presence and user experience. Junior web designers with knowledge of HTML, CSS, and design tools like Adobe XD or Figma are in demand, especially as websites evolve to be more interactive and mobile-friendly.

Is AI replacing web design?

AI tools are increasingly used in web design to automate tasks like layout generation and content creation, but they do not fully replace the role of a junior web designer. Human creativity, user experience understanding, and design skills remain essential for creating effective and personalized websites. Web designers often use AI as a supplement to enhance productivity and innovation.

How much do entry level website designers make?

Entry-level web designers typically earn between $40,000 and $55,000 annually, depending on location, skills, and employer. Starting salaries may be lower in some regions, but with proficiency in design tools like Adobe XD or Figma, and basic knowledge of HTML and CSS, new designers can increase their earning potential quickly.

What are some common challenges faced by Junior Web Designers when starting out, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Web Designers often encounter challenges such as adapting to different design tools, balancing creativity with user and client requirements, and working within established brand guidelines. Additionally, collaborating with developers and receiving constructive feedback can be new experiences. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to seek mentorship within your team, actively participate in design reviews, and continuously practice using industry-standard tools like Adobe XD or Figma. Embracing feedback and staying updated on web design trends can also support your growth in the role.

How to become a junior web designer?

To become a junior web designer, you should learn basic web design skills such as HTML, CSS, and graphic design, often through online courses or a relevant degree. Building a portfolio of sample projects and gaining experience with design tools like Adobe Photoshop or Figma can improve your chances. Entry-level positions may also require knowledge of user experience principles and familiarity with content management systems.

What are Junior Web Designers?

Junior Web Designers are entry-level professionals who assist in creating and maintaining websites. They typically work under the supervision of senior designers or web developers, helping with tasks such as designing page layouts, selecting color schemes, and ensuring websites are user-friendly and visually appealing. Junior Web Designers may also be responsible for updating website content and troubleshooting basic design issues. Their role often involves learning and applying HTML, CSS, and sometimes basic JavaScript, while gaining experience to advance in their web design careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Web Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Web Designer, you need a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, basic graphic design principles, and a portfolio showcasing your work, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and content management systems such as WordPress is typically expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and interpret client needs. Job description

About us:

Playground is an internationally renowned gaming destination located a short 15-minute drive south of downtown Montreal, within the Mohawk territory of Kahnawake. We are currently expanding, unveiling new gaming floors, a luxurious hotel, and specialized dining options.

Position Overview:

We are looking for a creative, adaptable, and "hungry" designer with an AI-first mindset to join our team. We are open to hiring at either a Junior or Mid-Level, depending on the candidate's portfolio, autonomy, and technical proficiency. The ideal candidate understands great design principles but also knows that efficiency, automation, and adaptability are part of the modern designer’s toolkit. You possess a strong marketing mindset, ensuring that every asset you create is optimized to engage audiences, build brand equity, and drive conversions.

You will work on-site alongside a talented team to produce high-quality creatives for digital and print. This is a role for a designer who takes ownership of their work - whether that means executing a polished layout with speed (Junior) or conceptualizing a new campaign from scratch with minimal supervision (Mid-Level).

What You’ll Do:

Core Responsibilities (All Levels):

  • Multi-Channel Design: Design engaging digital and print assets for email, social media, web banners, and promotions.
  • AI-First Execution: Use AI tools to support and speed up design workflows where applicable.
  • Web Collaboration: Collaborate with the marketing team to design cohesive campaign assets.
  • Brand Stewardship: Strictly adhere to and help evolve brand guidelines to ensure consistency across all customer touchpoints.

Mid-Level Responsibilities:

  • Campaign & Concept Creation: Assist with high-level campaign design and concept creation for pitches and new initiatives.
  • End-to-End Ownership: Oversee the design process from initial concept to final delivery with a high degree of independence.

Who You Are:

  • Software Proficiency: Highly proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and Figma.
  • AI & Automation Mindset: Naturally curious, proactive, and eager to embrace AI tools for both creative brainstorming and rapid design execution.
  • Bilingual Communication: Professional proficiency in either English or French, with functional to fluent capabilities in the second language, ensuring seamless collaboration on localized campaigns for the Quebec market.
  • Marketing & Conversion Mindset: A performance-driven approach to design; you understand how typography, visual hierarchy, and clear call-to-actions (CTAs) influence user behavior and drive marketing results.
  • Experience Tiers:

  • Junior Level: 1–3 years of experience, with a focus on production speed, accuracy, and diving deep into our brand identity.
  • Mid-Level: 3–5+ years of experience, with a focus on project management, autonomy, and strategic campaign execution.

  • Portfolio: A diverse portfolio showcasing your creative style, with a strong emphasis on digital marketing and email design.
Bonus Points For
  • HTML/CSS Familiarity: Comfort with email coding is highly helpful, or a strong willingness to learn the basics of email templates. (Expertise is not required!).
  • Industry Experience: A professional background or passion for hospitality, lifestyle, or gaming-related design.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive compensation.
  • Junior Tier: $40k-$45k/year.
  • Mid-Level: $52k-$65k/year.
  • Subsidized lunch.
  • Opportunities for professional growth.
  • On-site parking.
  • Inclusive, collaborative team culture.
  • Company-wide events and Playground Cares volunteer opportunities.

This isn’t just a design job, it’s your creative launchpad.

You’ll get hands-on experience, the chance to work with evolving tools and the freedom to help shape how a growing brand connects with its audience. If you’re ready to bring your skills into the future of design, we’d love to meet you!
