What does a junior structural engineer do?

A Junior Structural Engineer assists in designing, analyzing, and evaluating structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They work under the supervision of more experienced engineers, preparing drawings, calculations, and reports. Their responsibilities often include site visits, reviewing construction materials, and ensuring compliance with safety and building codes. This role is ideal for recent engineering graduates who are looking to gain practical experience and work towards professional licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior structural engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with structural analysis software such as AutoCAD, SAP2000, or ETABS, and progress toward EIT or FE certification, is often required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help you excel in this collaborative field. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and compliant structural designs and contribute to successful project delivery.

What are some common challenges faced by junior structural engineers when starting their careers?

Junior Structural Engineers often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex design codes, managing time across multiple projects, and effectively communicating technical details to senior engineers and other stakeholders. Adjusting to the fast-paced nature of the construction industry and learning to balance fieldwork with office-based design tasks can also be demanding. However, many organizations support new engineers with mentorship, training sessions, and collaborative team environments to help them overcome these challenges and grow professionally.

What is the difference between Junior Structural Engineer vs Structural Designer?

If you’re an entrepreneur with a technical soul, we want to hear from you. Join our team today and help make a consequential difference!

You will be a part of our growing nuclear team where we ensure world-class project delivery through the skills of our people, methodologies, governance, and systems. Responsibilities and duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Lead and deliver civil/structural engineering design and analysis for nuclear facilities, including safety-related and non-safety-related structures
  • Prepare engineering work packages ensuring budgets and schedules are met
  • Define civil/structural project requirements as they relate to scope, cost and schedule
  • Develop and/or review civil/structural deliverables such as design basis documents, structural calculations, drawings, technical specifications, datasheets, and foundation, embedment, anchorage, and pipe/equipment support designs
  • Apply nuclear codes and standards (e.g., CSA, ACI, AISC, ASCE, ASME) in regulated environments
  • Perform seismic analysis and qualification of structures, systems and components
  • Support refurbishment and life-extension scopes, including structural condition assessments, concrete aging management, and field engineering
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, seismic, geotechnical, and construction)
  • Provide technical oversight, checking, and mentoring of junior and intermediate engineers
  • Provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates
  • Actively manage relationships with clients and vendors

You bring to the role:

  • A registered professional engineer in Ontario, or eligible to obtain
  • Valid security clearance for Canada, or the ability to obtain
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in project engineering specific to civil/structural design
  • Working knowledge of seismic analysis, reinforced concrete, steel design, and nuclear facility design principles
  • Experience with nuclear, power generation and other highly regulated industries, and working inside a Nuclear Quality Management System compliant with CSA N286 and/or NQA-1
  • Familiar with the grading approach for engineering and procurement activities
  • Sound understanding of design engineering codes and technical standards, specifically NBCC, OBC, CSA A23.3 (Concrete Design), CSA S16 (Steel Design), and the relevant CSA N-series standards, including CSA N291 (Requirements for Nuclear Safety-Related Structures), CSA N287 (CANDU Concrete Containment Structures), and CSA N289 (Seismic Design and Qualification). Exposure to US nuclear codes such as ACI 349 or ASCE 43 is a plus, but not required
