What is a junior software test engineer?

Junior Software Test Engineers are entry-level professionals responsible for ensuring the quality and functionality of software applications. They execute test cases, identify and document bugs, and collaborate with developers to resolve issues. Typically, they work under the guidance of senior testers or quality assurance leads and gradually build their skills in areas such as test automation, bug tracking, and software development life cycles. Their work is essential for delivering reliable and user-friendly software products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior software test engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Software Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, test case design, and basic programming or scripting skills, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test management tools like JIRA, automation frameworks such as Selenium, and knowledge of version control systems like Git are commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate effectively with developers. These competencies ensure software quality, minimize defects, and contribute to efficient, reliable product releases.

What are some common challenges faced by junior software test engineers when transitioning from manual to automated testing?

Junior Software Test Engineers often find the transition from manual to automated testing challenging due to the need to learn new programming languages and testing frameworks. Adapting to writing and maintaining test scripts, understanding version control systems, and troubleshooting automation failures can initially be overwhelming. However, most organizations provide mentorship, training resources, and collaboration opportunities with senior engineers to help ease this transition. Over time, developing these automation skills not only increases efficiency but also opens up further career advancement opportunities.

Job description

About 1Valet

1Valet is a Canadian technology company transforming the way people interact with their buildings. We develop smart building software and integrated hardware solutions that connect property managers, residents, and visitors-creating seamless, secure, and intelligent building experiences.

We're a growing company where every team member plays a pivotal role. Our products are installed in properties across North America, and we're rapidly expanding. Join us as we shape the future of smart buildings.

About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic Junior Quality Assurance Engineer to join our team at 1VALET. In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring the reliability and performance of 1VALET's hardware and software products, including our Entry systems and third-party hardware integrations (smart locks, thermostats, sensors, and other IoT devices).

Working under the guidance of senior engineers and squad leads, you will collaborate with Product, Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, and Operations teams to test new features, support field deployments, and help reproduce issues reported by customers. This is a hands-on QA role ideal for someone eager to build a career working directly with physical hardware, firmware, software, and connected IoT systems.

Responsibilities

Hardware & System Testing

  • Execute test plans and test cases for hardware products, embedded software, and connected IoT systems.
  • Perform functional, regression, and integration testing on 1VALET Entry systems and related hardware.
  • Assist in validating hardware integrations, including smart locks, thermostats, access readers, and sensors.
  • Support senior engineers during new hardware bring-up and setup in the lab.

Software & Platform QA

  • Test mobile applications, backend services, and embedded firmware as part of end-to-end system validation.
  • Run tests across multiple device types, screen sizes, hardware revisions, and firmware versions.
  • Work closely with software engineers to reproduce, log, and verify fixes for software defects.

Field & Operations Support

  • Collaborate with Customer Experience (CX) and Operations teams to help investigate issues reported from the field.
  • Replicate customer-reported bugs in the lab using physical hardware and test environments.
  • Document precise bug details and reproduction steps to help engineering teams resolve issues efficiently.

Process & Continuous Learning

  • Log, track, and re-test bugs using test management and bug-tracking software.
  • Maintain clear test documentation and report test execution results to the team.
  • Actively participate in team discussions to help improve overall product quality and testing efficiency.

Required Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of experience in Quality Assurance (or equivalent through internships, hands-on projects, or lab coursework).
  • Foundational understanding of hardware, software, and basic networking concepts (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth/BLE).
  • Hands-on familiarity with physical hardware, consumer electronics, or lab equipment.
  • Basic experience using bug-tracking tools (e.g., Jira, TestRail, or similar).
  • Strong problem-solving mindset, attention to detail, and a desire to learn complex hardware-software ecosystems.

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to smart building technology, proptech, access control, or IoT devices.
  • Basic familiarity with testing tools, APIs, or command-line utilities.
  • Experience or interest in using AI-assisted tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, GitHub Copilot) to help write test cases, debug, or write documentation.
  • Academic or project experience testing embedded systems or mobile applications.

What We Offer

  • Hands-on experience working with real, deployed hardware systems used in residential and commercial buildings.
  • Strong mentorship and opportunities for rapid professional growth within a supportive team.
  • Close collaboration across product, engineering, CX, and operations teams.
  • Access to a fully equipped R&D lab and hands-on testing environment.
