Job description

Mainstay provides owner's representatives to help mining companies in Canada manage their capital construction projects. Our multidisciplinary teams of qualified professionals have successfully overseen billions of dollars worth of projects in mining.

Mainstay project engineers are responsible for establishing, coordinating, and monitoring all aspects of the engineering effort to undertake and complete the technical engineering design in accordance with the project scope documents.

Responsibilities:

The Lead Engineer is responsible for all aspects of design execution including providing leadership and coaching with emphasis on, quality review, progress tracking, and project delivery. This position will be responsible for ensuring that an assigned design team complies with our engineering practices and policy and will be significantly involved in technical training of team members. The Lead will make critical contributions by leading the daily operations of the team and overall program quality. This is a complex job requiring strong judgment, exceptional communication skills and a thorough understanding of design requirements.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Complete structural reviews of existing buildings/structures
  • Complete written condition/evaluation reports
  • Completion of engineering design assignments and management of projects of various scope and complexity
  • Completion of complex engineering design projects in conjunction with senior Engineers
  • Use of a variety of standard engineering methods and techniques to solve problems
  • Office review of structural engineering shop drawings and calculations
  • Field review of structural related construction (e.g. reinforcing steel)
  • Application of design software for structural design in conjunction with senior Engineers
  • Recommend technological improvements to the department
  • Assist other engineers in carrying out technical tasks requiring accuracy in calculations, completeness of data an adherence to prescribed testing analysis, design or computation methods
  • Providing guidance and direction to junior and student engineers or technicians
  • Client interfacing, as required
  • Project management and coordination duties
  • Other assigned duties and tasks, as required
  • Participate in project meetings between engineering, project management, operations, and client.
  • Overseeing all projects, setting clear direction and expectations, keeping staff focused on objectives, and fostering a sense of teamwork and dedication to meeting goals
  • Providing technical advice and direction to the team
  • Perform project quality checks, project quality audits, build lessons learned documentation and improvement plans
  • Understand and apply all applicable industry and client standards for design and engineering
  • Monitoring safety, workflow, team dynamics and work practices
  • Participating in recruitment and managing staff, including conducting performance evaluations, dealing with performance issues, and developing staff training and development plans
  • Communicating with leadership on team resourcing and project health
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with clients and customers

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement
  • Effective Interpersonal Skills – Strong Written and Verbal skills are a must, to ensure clear communication between team members, clients, contractors, and suppliers
  • Able to work effectively both independently under minimal supervision, and as a member of a team
  • Strong customer service focus supported by solid time management and prioritization skills
  • Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to set priorities, organize work and complete work within given timelines
  • Systematic approach to problem solving
  • Ability to adapt to ongoing changes
  • Demonstrated negotiating skills
  • Excellent Personal Computing Skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in the domain of distribution design including applied knowledge of codes, regulations and distribution standards, policies and procedures

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering with P.Eng designation
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a consulting engineering environment managing structural restoration projects
