Intermediate Electrical Designer/Drafter - Technologist
Location: London, Ontario

Salary Range: $64,000 – $80,000

SBM is currently seeking an Intermediate Electrical Designer to join our dynamic team. This role is ideal for someone with strong technical expertise in electrical building systems, a passion for design & drafting, and a desire to support junior staff while managing project delivery. 
The successful candidate will support the Electrical Engineering Department in design & drafting of electrical systems for buildings across the residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial sectors. They will collaborate with the electrical design and engineering team to develop permit and construction drawings, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable codes and standards. The role requires the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary project team to meet design objectives and project deadlines. The candidate will also be encouraged to take on special initiatives aimed at improving current design processes and workflows. Occasional site visits may be required to gain practical insight and provide feedback on completed design work. Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on the candidate's experience and skill set.

SBM is an established multi-disciplinary Planning, Civil, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering firm that utilizes a team first, collaborative approach to building engineering. We are a fast growing, energetic company that encourages personal growth and forward thinking. We are looking to add like-minded individuals to our team. SBM has offices in London and Kitchener, providing engineering services to a variety of private and public sector clients across Southwestern Ontario. The firm employs over 100 engineers, engineers-in-training, technologists, technicians, planners, and administrative personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the design team with design & drafting for a variety of building projects (e.g., residential, commercial, institutional).
  • Prepare electrical drawings, load calculations, and system layouts. 
  • Coordinate with internal disciplines (mechanical, structural, civil) and external stakeholders (architects, clients, authorities).
  • Ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards (e.g., OESC, OBC, CSA).
  • Support with mentoring junior electrical designers and interns. 
  • Other tasks as assigned by Electrical Team Lead(s), Engineers or Division Manager. 

Skills / Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or Architectural Technology.
  • CET designation (or eligible).
  • Minimum 4+ years of relevant experience in building systems design. 
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, and electrical design software (e.g. AGi32).
  • Strong understanding of power distribution, lighting, life safety, and communication systems. 
  • Proven problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organization. 
  • Commitment to ongoing professional and personal growth; willingness to learn. 
  • Ability to work both independently with little supervision and in a team environment. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Adaptable and flexible to changing priorities. 
  • Capable of working on and/or managing several projects at the same time.

Compensation:

This is a full-time position with a salary of $64,000 - $80,000 and annual performance bonus. SBM offers a positive working environment and a good relationship with our employees translates directly to better customer service and a superior finished product for our clients. The successful candidate will typically work 8am-5pm Monday-Thursday and 8am-2:30pm on Fridays.
