What is a junior software development engineer in test?

A Junior Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) is an entry-level professional who combines software development and quality assurance skills to design, develop, and maintain automated tests for software applications. These engineers work closely with developers and testers to ensure the software meets quality standards and functions as intended. They typically write test scripts, identify bugs, and help improve the overall testing process to deliver reliable products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior software development engineer in test?

To thrive as a Junior Software Development Engineer In Test, you need a solid understanding of software testing principles, programming fundamentals (commonly in Java, Python, or C#), and a relevant bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test automation frameworks (such as Selenium or JUnit), version control systems like Git, and continuous integration tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a proactive attitude help you identify issues and collaborate within development teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring software quality, streamlining testing processes, and supporting overall team productivity.

What are some common challenges faced by junior software development engineers in test when starting out, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Software Development Engineers in Test (SDETs) often encounter challenges such as understanding complex codebases, balancing manual and automated testing, and communicating effectively with development teams. To overcome these, it's helpful to ask clarifying questions, seek mentorship, and actively participate in code reviews. Job description

We're building a world of health around every individual - shaping a more connected, convenient and compassionate health experience. At CVS Health®, you'll be surrounded by passionate colleagues who care deeply, innovate with purpose, hold ourselves accountable and prioritize safety and quality in everything we do. Join us and be part of something bigger - helping to simplify health care one person, one family and one community at a time.

Position Summary:

If you're eager to make a real impact in the healthcare industry through meaningful contributions, explore a role in technology with CVS Health. Our journey calls for technical innovators and UI visionaries: come help us shape the future of care delivery. At CVS Health, we are driven by a vision to redefine healthcare in America by placing people at the forefront of everything we build. We're seeking an experienced, hands‑on full stack engineer with a strong UI background who shares our commitment to engineering excellence and innovation. As part of our Utilization Management (UM) team, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to modernizing and advancing technologies that directly impact patient care and clinical workflows. As a Staff Full Stack Engineer at CVS Health, you'll serve as the technical leader for the UM squad - owning the end‑to‑end delivery of high‑quality software that enhances clinician and member experiences. This is a deeply hands‑on role: you will be writing, reviewing, and owning production code every day while simultaneously leading the squad. You'll drive all phases of software engineering, from requirements analysis to production deployment, while championing agile methodologies and engineering best practices. You will be the go‑to technical authority for the squad, mentoring engineers, making architectural decisions, and ensuring the team delivers with quality on aggressive timelines.

In this role, you will:
  • Lead the UM squad technically end‑to‑end - setting direction, removing blockers, and owning outcomes across the full stack.
  • Actively write and contribute production‑quality code daily - this is a hands‑on engineering leadership role.
  • Drive UI architecture and development for the UM application, with a strong emphasis on building intuitive, accessible, and performant front‑end experiences using React or Angular.
  • Be hands‑on in the development process, actively contributing code and guiding junior developers through debugging and delivery.
  • Design, implement, and integrate LLM‑based solutions into UM workflows, applying hands‑on knowledge of ML concepts such as prompt engineering, fine‑tuning, embeddings, and retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG).
  • Architect and manage complex microservice frameworks, ensuring services are well‑defined, independently deployable, resilient, and observable at scale.
  • Partner with product managers and clinical stakeholders to translate complex UM workflows into clear, user‑centered requirements and designs.
  • Own architectural decisions across both UI and backend systems, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and reliability.
  • Perform release management and coordinate deployments across environments.
  • Champion observability, testing, and operational excellence to ensure 24/7 uptime for critical healthcare workflows.
Required Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of full stack software engineering experience, with demonstrable depth in UI/front‑end development (React or Angular required) and back end services.
  • 5+ years of experience in one or more modern languages such as Python, Java, TypeScript, or JavaScript - with a track record of writing and owning production code.
  • 5+ years of experience building APIs, microservices, and modern software patterns; including hands‑on experience designing and operating complex microservice architectures at scale.
  • 5+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, containerized applications, and UI frameworks (React/Angular).
  • 2+ years of hands‑on experience with LLM implementation - including integrating large language models into production applications, prompt engineering, and working knowledge of ML concepts such as embeddings, RAG, fine‑tuning, or model evaluation.
  • 2+ years of experience in the GCP ecosystem with hands‑on development using BigTable, Spanner, GKE, and Cloud Functions.
  • 2+ years of experience building observable, fault‑tolerant systems for 24/7 availability.
  • 2+ years of experience leading or mentoring a squad or team of engineers, driving delivery on complex initiatives.
  • 1+ year of experience gathering complex requirements and managing relationships with business and clinical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proven ability to lead a full squad independently - setting technical standards, unblocking engineers, and owning delivery - while remaining a active, contributing engineer.
  • Strong UX sensibility with experience designing workflows for complex enterprise or clinical applications.
  • Familiarity with microservice patterns such as service mesh, event‑driven architecture, circuit breakers, and distributed tracing.
  • Experience with AI/ML frameworks and tooling (LangChain, LlamaIndex, Vertex AI, OpenAI APIs, HuggingFace, etc.).
  • Familiarity with all phases of the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical decisions for non‑technical partners.
  • Experience with GCP architecture, optimization patterns, and data engineering.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD tools: GIT, Bitbucket, Artifactory, Jenkins, etc.
  • Previous healthcare or utilization management domain knowledge strongly preferred.
Education:

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, Data Analytics, Machine Learning, or related field required. Master's Degree preferred.
