What is a junior software development engineer in test?

A Junior Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) is an entry-level professional who combines software development and quality assurance skills to design, develop, and maintain automated tests for software applications. These engineers work closely with developers and testers to ensure the software meets quality standards and functions as intended. They typically write test scripts, identify bugs, and help improve the overall testing process to deliver reliable products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior software development engineer in test?

To thrive as a Junior Software Development Engineer In Test, you need a solid understanding of software testing principles, programming fundamentals (commonly in Java, Python, or C#), and a relevant bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test automation frameworks (such as Selenium or JUnit), version control systems like Git, and continuous integration tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a proactive attitude help you identify issues and collaborate within development teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring software quality, streamlining testing processes, and supporting overall team productivity.

Job description

Crum & Forster Company Overview
Travel Insured International (TII), a Crum & Forster company, is hiring a Senior Software Engineer, Quality & Automation.
Travel Insured International is a leading travel insurance provider with more than 30 years in business. As a key component of our Specialty Business Unit, within the Accident & Health division, TII provides travel protection plans to help each individual travel confidently. Travel Insured International is proud to offer products to consumers and to agency partners of all sizes. We're committed to providing dependable coverage, great value, and end-to-end satisfaction for all customers.
Job Description
This is a hands-on engineering role focused on quality-often referred to in the industry as an SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test). This role writes code to test software: rather than executing test cases manually, you build the automation frameworks, tools, and test infrastructure that verify quality at scale, blending deep software development skills with a quality-first mindset.
You will own TII's test strategy and automation platform as a senior individual contributor. The mission is to transform a largely manual testing practice into an AI-accelerated, CI/CD-integrated automation capability-eliminating any regression bottleneck that slows releases, while elevating quality across our Agile Release Trains. We welcome candidates from either a software engineering or quality engineering background. Whether you're a talented full-stack engineer with an automation-first mindset or a quality engineer who codes, what matters most is strong hands-on engineering, the ability to build scalable frameworks, and a genuine passion for shipping high-quality software.
This is a build-it-yourself role: you will design and code scalable automation frameworks, integrate testing into Azure DevOps pipelines, introduce AI-assisted test generation and predictive quality analytics, and uplift the standards and output of a distributed employee/offshore testing team. You will own quality strategy and the automation platform while partnering with engineering and product leadership-embedding quality earlier (shift-left) and making it a shared, measurable engineering discipline in support of TII's growth target and expansion into new distribution channels.
What you will do:
Quality Strategy
  • Own and evolve TII's test strategy, quality standards, and risk-based testing approach across the Agile Release Trains.
  • Define shift-left quality practices that embed testing into design and development.
  • Establish release quality gates and standards in partnership with engineering and product leadership.
  • Lead root cause analysis to systematically minimize production defects.
  • Ensure adherence to relevant industry standards (ISTQB, ISO) and regulatory/compliance needs in a regulated insurance environment.

Test Automation & Engineering
  • Design, build, and own the automation platform-web (Cypress/Playwright or comparable), mobile, API (GraphQL/REST via Postman), and regression-integrated into Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines.
  • Architect reusable, scalable, and maintainable automation components and frameworks, including data-driven and keyword-driven designs.
  • Drive the conversion of manual testing to automated, continuous testing, systematically increasing regression coverage.
  • Establish API/contract testing for GraphQL and REST services and validate service integrations.
  • Introduce performance/load and security testing aligned to the platform's scale and resilience goals.
  • Own test data management, including compliant synthetic test data for PII-sensitive scenarios.

Quality Engineering Excellence
  • Champion quality as a shared engineering responsibility-embedding testability standards into how software is designed and built.
  • Partner with engineering architecture to align testing with architectural standards and DevSecOps practices.
  • Define and make visible quality metrics-escaped-defect rate, automated coverage, test flakiness, and cycle-time impact-through reporting and dashboards.
  • Drive measurable reduction of the regression bottleneck.

Release & Delivery Quality
  • Provide quality signals and gate recommendations into the release process.
  • Ensure regression and critical-path coverage give teams the confidence to release faster.
  • Oversee functional, regression, performance, security, and UAT testing across web, mobile, API, and data layers.

Leadership within the Team
  • Co-lead a small group of quality engineers, manual testers, and off shore test engineers.
  • Uplift and direct the distributed employee/offshore testing team-raising automation skills and standards, and converting manual capacity toward automation.
  • Mentor engineers and testers, demonstrating the leadership behaviors that support growth into a formal QE leadership role.
  • Establish onboarding, standards, and ways of working that scale across distributed teams.
  • Foster collaboration between QA, Development, DevOps, Product, and business stakeholders throughout the SDLC.

AI & Innovation
  • Introduce and own AI-assisted test generation-auto-creating tests from requirements and code to accelerate coverage.
  • Leverage tools such as GitHub Copilot to improve scripting efficiency and productivity across the team.
  • Build predictive quality analytics-using data to identify defect-prone areas and focus risk-based testing.
  • Pilot intelligent test maintenance/self-healing to reduce automation upkeep.
  • Champion responsible AI use in testing (quality, security, and data-privacy guardrails), aligned to enterprise AI standards.
  • Other duties as assigned
