A junior software developer works on a development team writing and maintaining code for computer applications. As a junior software developer, your primary responsibilities are to learn the codebase, work on small bug fixes, and participate in paired programming with mid-level and senior developers. Junior software developers are entry-level positions, but as you gain experience and build up your programming skills, you will start to take on larger projects. Your job duties include attending and contributing to development team meetings, troubleshooting, patching computer code, and collaborating with other developers to create applications.

What does a junior software developer do?

A Junior Software Developer is an entry-level professional who assists in designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced developers and contribute to various stages of the software development lifecycle. Their responsibilities often include writing basic code, debugging, collaborating with team members, and learning new technologies to improve their skills. This role is a great starting point for individuals looking to build a career in software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Software Developer, you need proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), algorithms, and problem-solving, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic knowledge of databases, and experience with development frameworks are valuable technical assets. Strong communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn help you adapt and contribute effectively in collaborative environments. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering reliable code, supporting team goals, and growing in a fast-evolving tech landscape.

What are some typical challenges a junior software developer might face when starting out, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Software Developers often encounter challenges such as understanding large codebases, managing their time effectively between learning and delivering tasks, and adapting to new development tools or frameworks. To overcome these hurdles, it's helpful to actively seek guidance from more experienced team members, participate in code reviews, and make consistent use of documentation. Regular communication within the team and a willingness to ask questions can significantly speed up the learning process and help build confidence in your role.

How much money do junior software developers make?

Junior software developers typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on location, industry, and skills. Entry-level roles often require knowledge of programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, and familiarity with development tools and frameworks.

How to get a junior software developer job with no experience?

To secure a junior software developer position with no experience, focus on building a portfolio through personal projects, contribute to open-source code, and learn relevant programming languages like Python or JavaScript. Gaining familiarity with version control tools such as Git and completing online courses or certifications can also improve your chances. Internships or apprenticeships can provide practical experience and industry exposure.

Job description

What We Offer

At Convverge, we build business-level applications on Microsoft Azure, SharePoint, and the Power Platform that solve complex, high-stakes problems for our clients. We're regional leaders in a growing cloud technology space — and we're growing with it. You'll work alongside developers, architects, and designers who take quality seriously, on projects that challenge you to think beyond the task in front of you.

About Our Team

We’re a close-knit, high-trust team that moves quickly, supports one another, and takes pride in delivering quality work. We lead with quality as a design principle, not an afterthought.

We work in small, empowered teams where junior developers are given meaningful opportunities to contribute, ask questions, learn from experienced team members, and build confidence through real project work.

We value diverse backgrounds and experiences because the best solutions come from teams that don’t all think the same way.

About You

We are seeking a Junior Software Developer who is curious, motivated, and excited to grow in a collaborative technical environment. You enjoy learning new technologies, solving problems, and turning business requirements into practical software solutions. You may be early in your career, but you bring strong fundamentals, a willingness to ask thoughtful questions, and a commitment to building reliable, high-quality work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, development, testing, and support of client solutions in collaboration with senior developers and project teams.
  • Work within an Agile development environment, following team processes, coding standards, and delivery best practices.
  • Break down problems into smaller tasks and seek guidance when needed to prioritize and move work forward.
  • Create and maintain as-built documentation for client solutions.
  • Build and update technical support documentation for internal teams and client solutions.
  • Support testing and quality assurance activities by reviewing functionality, documenting issues, and helping validate fixes.
  • Develop software components and solutions using Microsoft technologies, including the Power Platform, with support from experienced team members.
  • Communicate questions, blockers, risks, or delays early so the team can support successful project delivery.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Software Development, Information Technology, or a related program, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Approximately 0–2 years of software development experience, including internships, co-op placements, academic projects, personal projects, or professional experience.
  • Foundational experience with at least one programming language, such as C#, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, or a similar language.
  • Basic familiarity with version control tools such as Git.
  • Interest in Microsoft cloud technologies, including Power Platform, Azure, Microsoft 365, SharePoint.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, with a willingness to ask questions and share progress openly.

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to Agile development practices through work, school, or project experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, Azure DevOps, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, or Power Platform.
  • Experience with C#, PowerShell, Bash, APIs, databases, or web development frameworks.
  • Previous experience working on client-facing, consulting, or team-based software projects.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunity to learn from experienced developers, consultants, architects, and project teams.
  • Career advancement, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
  • Hands-on exposure to Microsoft cloud technologies and meaningful client projects.

What We Expect

Our team shows up ready to do great work, and we expect the same from you. We collaborate, take ownership seriously, ask for help when needed, and hold each other to a high standard. In return, you’ll find a team that supports your growth and clients who genuinely value what we build together.

What We Value

Our company leads with a values-based mindset, and we believe the best career matches happen when personal values align with ours. Before you apply, take a moment to review our five core values — we think it's worth your time.

Application Process

If this sounds like the right fit, we'd love to hear from you. Submit your resume and a cover letter telling us about your experience and why Convverge is the right next step.
