Job description

General Purpose This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair and customer service work for the City's Paquette Ice Arena facility, including, the ice surface and refrigeration equipment, the Pro Shop , surrounding grounds and parking area and related equipment. In addition this position will be responsible for general maintenance and repair of other Parks and City buildings as directed. Union Affiliation: American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Pay Grade 14: $28.08 - $31.28 Hourly Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/week Essential Job Functions Open and close Arena

Perform equipment safety inspections in line with facility procedure and policy. Verify that temporary staff are present. Monitor, interpret and respond to refrigeration plant and Ice Arena computer control systems and notify supervisors of deviations from accepted standards.

Communicate with Arena Customer Service and Manager and respond to high volume customer requests/complaints regarding ice scheduling and room set up. Respond to customers regarding ice resurfacing, skate rentals, and other Pro Shop retail demands, maintenance and other general facility requests. Respond by telephone and in person to public inquiries on arena rules, regulations and use in a courteous and professional manner.

Assist as required Arena Customer Service and Manager of Arena and Sports to receive and confirm scheduling requests, collect, receive, issue receipts and secure fees in accordance with Arena policies and procedures. Prepare ice resurfacing machine for use by filling the water and fuel tanks, washing tires and connecting drag towel and by performing routine vehicle maintenance to include oil changes, weekly greasing and weekly blade changes as well as other minor trouble shooting. Resurface both ice surfaces by operating ice-resurfacing machine.

Ensure safe and usable ice surface by proper setting of blades and proper regulation of water flow. Complete ice resurfacing process within 10-minute time frame, performed once every hour as needed. Perform routine ice surface maintenance to include electric edger, chopping ice off dasherboards, and shaving and flooding ice surface to ensure proper ice thickness.

Carry out routine inspections of glass and board system; install glass and repair board system as needed. Maintain, troubleshoot and program scoreboard. Monitor, interpret and respond to Ice Arena computer control systems and notify supervisors of deviations from accepted standards.

Assist in performing routine maintenance and troubleshoot compressors, chiller barrel, header pipes, dehumidifier and cooling tower, by changing filters, fluids, chemicals, etc. Perform annual removal and reinstallation of both ice surfaces to include measuring and painting of lines and ice surface and installing logos in the ice surface. Perform general custodial duties including, but not limited to mopping and sweeping building during and after public use, sweeping and mopping floors and bleachers, cleaning bathroom and locker room facilities, replenishing paper supplies as needed, stripping, washing and waxing floors using wet-vac and buffer, mopping skate mats, washing windows and glass, in Arena and around rink, cleaning dasher boards and washing walls.

Perform general repair, plumbing and carpentry as directed. Perform grounds maintenance duties including, raking, snow removal, litter pick-up and disposal around arena and other Parks facilities as directed. Ability to use City work order system.

Pick-up and dispose of solid waste, according to City protocols, throughout the Arena; change trash can liners. Pick-up and store all recyclable trash in accordance with Arena policies and procedures. Performs tasks associated with set-up/break-down and operation of special events, daily Arena programs, parties, meetings and athletic competitions, including High School and Junior Hockey games, figure skating competitions, etc.

Act as Sales representative in arena Pro Shop providing product knowledge, sizing and pricing of inventory. Maintain inventory of rental skates including performing necessary tasks including but not limited to, blade replacement, blade sharpening and skate sharpening. Perform point-of-sale transactions using computerized POS system.

Complete written forms to document time and materials used for projects, equipment and equipment maintenance and incidents and accidents. Act as "Ambassador" for the City, carrying out work and interacting with co-workers and the public in a respectful, professional manner. Carry out work in the field, and interact with the public in courteous and respectful manner, presenting self and City in a positive way required.

Union winter rules for plowing apply. Non- Essential Job Functions: Other duties as assigned, including operation of various types of equipment, including but not limited to duties for other divisions of the department, and other City departments, on a seasonal or project basis. Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development. High school diploma or equivalent. 1 year experience in one or more of the following; HVAC, carpentry, electric, plumbing, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent, required.

Experience as an ice maintenance worker in an indoor arena preferred. Experience operating an ice-resurfacing machine preferred. Previous work experience in a public setting, including regular interaction with customers or the general public, preferred.

Ability to act independently with little or no supervision. Ability to provide direction and/or work to volunteers and temporary employees. Utilize personal safety equipment in accordance with all VOSHA and Department policies and procedures.

Ability to operate all arena machinery and equipment. Ability to lift and carry 75 pounds on a regular basis. Ability to work evenings weekends and holidays.

Ability to work in all weather conditions. Ability to work on a rotating schedule with varying hours of work on various days of the week. Shall work effectively and cooperatively with crew members, supervisors, other City personnel, vendors and the general public.

Shall meet all required training requirements, including VOSHA safety rules and regulations Demonstrated work experience in maintaining a safe work site communication with a broad range of stakeholders in a public setting, the ability to multitask, and shift task priorities based on the needs of the facility as directed Able to learn to operate all equipment and perform all tasks as assigned. Shall maintain a professional appearance and behavior while engaging in field work, including wearing proper attire, foot ware, and using appropriate language (e.g. no use of profanity, inappropriate language, or inappropriate behavior) required
