Do I need a PhD to be a research scientist?

A Junior Signal Processing Research Scientist typically does not require a PhD, as many entry-level roles accept candidates with a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, computer science, or related fields. However, a PhD can be beneficial for advanced research positions or specialized areas, and skills in signal processing tools like MATLAB or Python are often essential.

Does digital signal processing pay well?

Digital signal processing (DSP) roles, including those for research scientists, generally offer competitive salaries due to specialized skills in algorithms, programming, and hardware integration. Entry-level positions typically start around industry average, with experienced professionals earning higher wages, especially in sectors like telecommunications, aerospace, and defense. Salary levels can also be influenced by certifications, advanced degrees, and geographic location.

What does a junior research scientist do?

A junior signal processing research scientist assists in developing and testing algorithms for analyzing signals, such as audio, radar, or communication data. They perform experiments, analyze data, and contribute to research projects under the supervision of senior scientists, often using tools like MATLAB or Python. The role typically requires a background in engineering, computer science, or related fields and may involve documentation and presentation of findings.

Is signal processing in demand?

Signal processing is in high demand across industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, healthcare, and defense, driven by advancements in sensor technology, data analysis, and machine learning. Junior signal processing research scientists with skills in algorithms, MATLAB, and Python are sought after to develop innovative solutions for real-time data analysis and system optimization.

Role Overview:

RTX BBN solves challenging problems of high importance to our customers in the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community and Industry by rapidly prototyping systems for sensing complex physical phenomena, correlating them to events of interest, and producing high-value, actionable information from the sensed data. The team specializes in delivering networked sensor system solutions by combining a strong understanding of the underlying physics, high-fidelity modeling, simulation of complex signatures and propagation phenomenology, deep expertise in signal processing, EM and RF phenomenology, and computer science, proven capabilities in system development, and mature tools to enable rapid design cycles from theory to demonstration. We are currently searching for a highly qualified Signal Processing Research Scientist to join our team in Arlington, VA.

What You Will Do:

Statistical signal processing:

  • Estimation techniques including Bayesian and non-Bayesian estimators, performance measures such as bias and mean-square error and bounds on estimator performance such as the Cramer-Rao lower bound.
  • Detection techniques including the Neyman-Pearson detection, probabilities of detection and false alarm, receiver operating curves, etc.

Cyclostationary signal processing:

  • CAF, SCF, SOF estimation.
  • Computation of Cyclic Cumulants.
  • Cyclic Feature Detection.

Adaptive signal processing:

  • Temporal and space-time adaptive processing.
  • Interference covariance estimation techniques including both structured and reduced-rank techniques.
  • Wiener filtering and on-line adaptive techniques such as LMS and RLS.
  • Kalman filtering, particle filtering, and multi-hypothesis tracking.
  • Machine learning and optimization for optimal control.
