What is a junior R statistical programmer?

Junior R Statistical Programmers are entry-level professionals who use the R programming language to analyze data, create statistical models, and generate reports, often for research, healthcare, or business purposes. They typically assist senior statisticians or data scientists by cleaning data, writing scripts, and performing basic statistical analyses. Their role helps organizations turn raw data into actionable insights, and they often work as part of a larger analytics or research team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior R statistical programmer?

To thrive as a Junior R Statistical Programmer, you need a solid understanding of statistical concepts, programming proficiency in R, and a bachelor's degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with data management tools like SQL, version control systems such as Git, and statistical analysis packages in R is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with team members and clearly present analytical findings. These competencies ensure accurate data analysis, reproducible results, and successful teamwork within research or business environments.

What are typical challenges a junior R statistical programmer might face when transitioning from academic projects to industry settings?

Junior R Statistical Programmers often find the shift from academic to industry work entails adapting to stricter timelines, code standardization, and collaborative workflows. In industry, you may need to follow specific documentation practices, utilize version control systems like Git, and adapt your code for scalability and reproducibility. Additionally, youโ€™ll frequently collaborate with statisticians, data managers, and project leads, which requires strong communication skills and the ability to incorporate feedback from multiple stakeholders.

What is the difference between Junior R Statistical Programmer vs Data Analyst?

AspectJunior R Statistical ProgrammerData Analyst
Required SkillsProficiency in R, basic statistical knowledge, programming skillsData manipulation, visualization, statistical analysis, often using R or Excel
Work EnvironmentPharmaceutical or clinical research settings, working on data processing and reportingBusiness, marketing, or healthcare sectors analyzing large datasets for insights
CertificationsOften requires a degree in statistics, biostatistics, or related field; certifications like SAS or R preferred

While both roles involve data analysis and R programming, Junior R Statistical Programmers focus more on clinical or research data processing within regulated environments, whereas Data Analysts work across various industries analyzing business data. The roles share skills but differ in context and application.

Job description

Position Purpose/Summary:
The Manufacturing Engineer II will lead failure analysis and corrective actions for X-ray tube and high-voltage power supply issues arising during final assembly and final test. This role is responsible for diagnosing both product and equipment-related failures, ensuring rapid resolution to support production continuity on the 3rd shift (graveyard shift, 10:00 pm to 6:00 am).
In addition to product-focused root cause analysis, this role will own the troubleshooting, maintenance, and performance optimization of X-ray tube conditioning and final test equipment, including high-voltage, vacuum, and data acquisition systems. This position requires a high degree of autonomy as the primary engineering support during the 3rd shift.
Essential Duties:
  • Lead the failure analysis process for X-ray tube and power supply failures in the final assembly and final test production area.
  • Identify and confirm root causes using structured methodologies (Fault Tree Analysis, DOE, 8D, etc.).
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair X-ray tube processing, final test, and other equipment, including:
    • High-voltage power supplies and control systems.
    • Vacuum systems (pumps, gauges, seals, leak detection).
    • Data acquisition and test software interfaces.
  • Diagnose whether failures are product-related or equipment-induced, and take appropriate corrective actions.
  • Perform and coordinate corrective and preventive maintenance (PM) on equipment to ensure effective utilization and stability.
  • Support the 3rd shift production supervisor in resolving real-time production, equipment, and process issues.
  • Collaborate with maintenance technicians to define repair plans, improve PM procedures, and drive long-term equipment reliability improvements.
  • Drive equipment-related root cause investigations and implement permanent corrective actions to reduce repeat failures and downtime.
  • Use data analysis to track and trend product failures, equipment performance, and sources of scrap to identify systemic issues.
  • Support scrap and yield improvement initiatives through both process and equipment optimization.

  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to implement design-for-reliability and CAPA actions.
  • Maintain and calibrate test equipment; ensure compliance with safety standards, especially for high-voltage and vacuum systems.
  • Author clear technical reports, failure summaries, and shift handoff documentation.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to operators and technicians on troubleshooting and equipment use.

Key Competencies:
To perform the job successfully, the individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position:
  • Strong analytical skills for correlating data, test results, and physical evidence.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting capability across electrical, mechanical, and vacuum systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex manufacturing/test equipment with limited support.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills in a low-support, off-shift environment.
  • Experience with SPC, DOE, and statistical analysis methods (preferred).
  • Experience with statistical software such as JMP, R, or Minitab (preferred).
  • Effective communication skills for cross-shift and cross-functional alignment.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Materials Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment performing:
    • Failure analysis.
    • Equipment troubleshooting and repair.
    • Data-driven process improvement.
  • Hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting manufacturing or test equipment.
  • Experience with high-voltage systems, vacuum systems, or X-ray/e-beam technologies (preferred).
  • Experience supporting production in an off-shift or high-autonomy environment (preferred).
