What does a junior project engineer do?

A Junior Project Engineer assists in planning, coordinating, and executing engineering projects under the supervision of senior engineers. Their responsibilities typically include preparing project documentation, conducting research, supporting design and implementation tasks, and communicating with team members and stakeholders. They often help monitor project progress, ensure compliance with safety and quality standards, and address technical issues as they arise. This role is ideal for recent engineering graduates looking to gain practical experience and develop their project management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior project engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Project Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, project management basics, and a relevant bachelor's degree in engineering. Position Overview

We are seeking a Junior Project Engineer to join our growing Project Engineering team. This is a technical, detail-oriented, and client-facing role focused primarily on onboarding new clients into Atlas Technica's support model and assisting with other technical project initiatives.

The Junior Project Engineer will work alongside Project Engineers, Project Managers, and Support teams to execute clearly defined technical and administrative project tasks across client environments. This role provides hands-on exposure to client onboarding, migrations, infrastructure deployments, Microsoft cloud technologies, and structured project execution while developing the skills necessary to take on increasingly complex technical responsibilities.

The successful candidate will be curious, organized, technically capable, and eager to learn. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career IT professional who wants to grow beyond traditional desktop or service desk support into technical implementations, client projects, and Project Engineering.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Support new-client onboarding projects from discovery and implementation through cutover and handoff to Support by owning assigned technical tasks and deliverables
  • Assist with the implementation of secure and standardized client environments under the guidance of Project Engineers and other senior technical resources
  • Support cloud, infrastructure, and security assessments by gathering technical information, documenting findings, and contributing to recommendations
  • Assist in developing Technical Project Plans by translating structured discovery information into defined tasks, checklists, dependencies, and effort estimates
  • Execute assigned technical work according to project milestones and deadlines while proactively communicating risks, questions, dependencies, and blockers
  • Implement and support Microsoft technologies including Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Teams, Intune, Conditional Access, Microsoft Entra ID, Windows Server, Active Directory, and Group Policy
  • Assist with email, file, workstation, and other client technology migrations from legacy or on-premises environments
  • Support basic networking and infrastructure implementations, including firewalls, switches, wireless access points, desktops, laptops, thin clients, and related equipment under appropriate technical guidance
  • Provide technical support during onboarding and project activities to minimize disruption and maintain a positive client experience
  • Create and maintain accurate technical documentation, including runbooks, configuration notes, diagrams, asset inventories, and implementation records
  • Follow established discovery, onboarding, quality-control, documentation, security, and technical standards while identifying opportunities for incremental process improvement
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Project Engineers, Support teams, clients, and other stakeholders while providing timely updates and participating in internal and client-facing meetings as needed

Requirements:

  • At least 6 months of professional IT experience in desktop support, service desk, systems administration, technical support, or a related environment
  • Hands-on experience supporting Microsoft Windows desktops and laptops, Microsoft 365 applications, mobile devices, printers, and common workplace technologies
  • Practical exposure to Microsoft 365 administration and familiarity with Microsoft Entra ID, Intune, Conditional Access, identity management, and modern security concepts
  • Foundational knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and basic email-flow concepts
  • Basic understanding of networking fundamentals, including LAN/WAN, DHCP, DNS, VLANs, firewalls, switching, and wireless networking
  • Exposure to enterprise networking technologies such as Palo Alto or Cisco firewalls, Cisco switches, Meraki, Ubiquiti, or similar platforms preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with technical and non-technical colleagues and clients
  • Strong documentation habits, organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to follow established technical procedures and standards
  • Ability to manage assigned tasks, meet deadlines, take ownership of work, and appropriately escalate questions or blockers
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced project environment
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule in New York, NY and support onsite client implementations or buildouts as needed
  • Microsoft MS-900 or CompTIA A+ certification completed, in progress, or willingness to obtain within a reasonable timeframe after hire

Desirable Qualities:

  • Previous experience contributing to client onboarding, email or file migrations, infrastructure deployments, workstation rollouts, or other technical projects
  • Experience working within an MSP, multi-client, professional services, or similar technical environment
  • Familiarity with structured discovery, Technical Project Plans, implementation checklists, or quality-control processes
  • Experience with MSP or project technologies such as ConnectWise, NinjaOne, SkyKick, or similar platforms
  • Exposure to email security, backup technologies, SIEM platforms, SSO/identity-provider integrations, or related cybersecurity technologies
  • Understanding of security principles such as MFA, Conditional Access, least-privilege access, and secure-by-default configuration
  • Interest in scripting, automation, or technical tooling such as PowerShell
  • Exposure to client or investor due-diligence processes and the ability to explain technical controls to non-technical audiences
