A Junior Music Software Developer assists in designing, developing, and maintaining software applications related to music production, audio editing, or digital instruments. They typically work under the guidance of senior developers and collaborate with audio engineers and musicians to implement features, fix bugs, and ensure high-quality sound processing. Their tasks often include coding, testing, and debugging music-related software, as well as learning about audio programming and digital signal processing. This role is ideal for those passionate about both music and technology and looking to grow their skills in a creative industry.

What types of projects and technologies do junior music software developers typically work with in their first year?

As a Junior Music Software Developer, you can expect to work on tasks such as fixing bugs, contributing to audio plugins, supporting digital audio workstation (DAW) integrations, and assisting in the development of music production tools. You'll likely use programming languages like C++, Python, or JavaScript, and interact with audio frameworks such as JUCE or VST. Collaboration with audio engineers, designers, and other developers is common, and you'll often participate in code reviews and team meetings to learn best practices and industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior music software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Music Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as C++, Python, or JavaScript), basic knowledge of digital audio concepts, and a relevant degree or coursework in computer science or audio engineering. Familiarity with DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), audio plugin frameworks (like JUCE or VST), and version control systems (like Git) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this collaborative and fast-evolving field. Job description

About the Role

Our client is a global leader in fire and life-safety systems, delivering mission-critical building safety solutions across North America. As part of the engineering team, you’ll own the Windows-based configuration software that technicians and engineers rely on to program, validate, and deploy fire alarm control panels in the field. This is a hands-on, product-critical role where software quality has direct real-world safety implications - every configuration your code validates protects lives and property.

What You’ll Do
  • Design, develop, and maintain Windows configuration software (C++ and C#/.NET) for fire alarm control panels.
  • Build and enhance features for panel programming, device configuration, and validation of configuration data.
  • Work across the boundary between the desktop configuration tool and embedded panel firmware, including communication over serial and IP protocols.
  • Implement robust data validation to ensure generated configurations meet fire and life-safety requirements.
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues spanning configuration software, panel communication, and data integrity.
  • Write unit and integration tests, participate in code reviews, and contribute to a maintainable, well-documented codebase.
  • Collaborate closely with firmware, hardware, QA, and product teams within an Agile delivery process.
  • Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives, contributing to continuous improvement of the team's engineering practices.
  • Support root-cause analysis for field-reported issues, working cross-functionally to reproduce, diagnose, and resolve defects.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including design specs, API references, and configuration validation rules.
  • Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge across the desktop/firmware boundary as the team scales.
Profile Requirement
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software/Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5-8 years of professional software development with strong hands-on experience in both C++ and C#.
  • Solid Windows desktop development with .NET (WinForms and/or WPF).
  • Strong fundamentals: object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, and systematic debugging.
  • Experience with communication protocols (serial / TCP-IP) between an application and a device.
  • Version control and CI workflows (Git and/or Azure DevOps).
  • US work authorization and ability to work onsite in Westford, MA, 3 days per week.
  • Professional fluency in English.
Nice to Have
  • Prior experience in a regulated or safety-critical industry (fire/life safety, medical devices, industrial controls, automotive).
  • Familiarity with embedded systems concepts, even without direct firmware development experience.
  • Exposure to static analysis, code coverage tooling, or safety/compliance standards (e.g., UL, NFPA).
Why choose us
  • An international community bringing together more than 110 different nationalities
  • An environment where trust is central: 70% of our leaders started their careers at the entry level
  • A strong training system with our internal Academy and more than 250 modules available
  • A dynamic work environment that frequently comes together for internal events (afterworks, team buildings, etc.)

Amaris Consulting promotes equal opportunities. We are committed to bringing together people from diverse backgrounds and creating an inclusive work environment. In this regard, we welcome applications from all qualified individuals, regardless of sex, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, beliefs, age, marital status, disability, or other characteristics.
