What Does a Junior Java Developer Do?

Junior Java developers are entry-level programmers who are part of a team of coders and developers. They work on both front-end and back-end codes to build an application. Being a junior Java developer requires extensive knowledge of coding and the program language JavaScript to develop and troubleshoot products. As a junior Java developer, you run tests to pinpoint errors, migrate code and data, and ensure the program is integrated with other company developments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Java Developer, and why are they important?

A Junior Java Developer should have a solid understanding of Java programming, object-oriented principles, and basic software development concepts, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Familiarity with tools such as IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse, version control systems like Git, and frameworks like Spring Boot is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills in this role. These competencies enable efficient code development, smooth collaboration, and the ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and project requirements.

What are some common challenges a Junior Java Developer might face during their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Java Developers often encounter challenges such as understanding large codebases, adapting to agile development processes, and managing task priorities. To overcome these hurdles, it’s helpful to proactively seek mentorship from senior developers, regularly review documentation, and participate in code reviews. Effective communication with team members also accelerates learning and helps clarify requirements or technical uncertainties. Embracing continuous learning through online resources and hands-on projects will further strengthen your skills and confidence.

What are Junior Java Developers?

They typically work under the supervision of more experienced developers and are responsible for writing code, debugging, and participating in code reviews. Their tasks may also include testing software, learning new frameworks, and assisting with the design and implementation of features. Junior Java Developers usually have foundational knowledge of Java and related technologies, and they are eager to develop their skills through hands-on experience.

Will AI replace Java devs?

Job description

Senior Software Engineer, APIs - Shelton, CT

This role is based out of our Shelton, CT headquarters.

Ready to build what’s next with one of the world’s most iconic brands?

Why Join Subway?

At Subway, we are not standing still. We are building.

This is a business focused on what matters most: growing franchisee profitability, strengthening our brand and creating long-term value. The people who thrive here are the ones who want to make a real impact.

You will not just do the work. You will shape it.

We move fast. We think like owners. We make decisions that matter. We hold ourselves to a high standard because what we do directly impacts thousands of franchisees around the world.

If you bring energy, accountability and a bias for action, you will fit right in.

We take the work seriously, but we also know the best results come from teams that support each other, celebrate wins and show up ready to build something better every day.

This is your chance to be part of what’s next.

About the Role:

Subway is on a mission to build a world-class digital platform that serves millions of guests and thousands of franchise locations globally. The Senior Software Engineer, APIs is a key technical contributor on the team that powers the integration layer connecting Subway’s front-end applications (iOS, Android, Web, Kiosk) with our internal and external partner systems.

You’ll design, build, and maintain high-performance APIs and services on AWS, collaborating closely with product, architecture, and partner engineering teams. You’ll also own integrations with major third-party delivery and marketplace platforms — including DoorDash, Uber Eats, and similar partners. AI-assisted development is a core part of how our team works — you’ll be expected to leverage tools like GitHub Copilot and Claude daily.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Design, develop, and document new and enhanced APIs as part of the Subway middleware platform, supporting both internal system integration and external partner connectivity.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, and similar) as a core part of daily engineering work. Champion AI tooling adoption across the team.
  • Build and maintain integrations with third-party delivery and marketplace partners (e.g., DoorDash, Uber Eats), ensuring reliable order flow, menu synchronization, and real-time operational data exchange.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders and product teams to understand requirements; translate them into scalable, maintainable architecture and implementation plans.
  • Conduct constructive code reviews and provide technical design guidance to peers and junior engineers.
  • Enforce data governance, security policies, and compliance standards throughout the software development lifecycle.

Qualifications (some examples listed below):

  • 5 or more years of hands-on production software development experience.
  • Demonstrated experience building and operating RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs at scale.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more of: JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js), Java, or C#.
  • Experience with serverless architectures on AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS).
  • Solid understanding of integration patterns: event-driven architecture, webhooks, async messaging, and pub/sub.
  • Experience integrating with third-party platforms and vendor APIs.
  • Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, or equivalent).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and source control workflows (Git, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps).
  • Strong debugging, root-cause analysis, and production incident management skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • People Management: No | Department: Guest Technology | Location: Shelton, CT (USA) | Scope: Global | Travel: Less than 10%.

What do we offer?

  • Insurance Plans (Medical, Life)
  • Pension/401K/RSP (country specific)
  • Competitive Bonus
  • Mobility Allowance
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Company Holidays
  • Volunteering time
  • And More……

Compensation: The base pay range for this role is $119,200 - $149,000 annually

Pay within this range will be determined in good faith based on job-related factors, which may include skills, experience, education/training, location, and internal equity.
