Job description

Responsibilities
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Infrastructure & Cloud Modernization Engineer to lead the support, stabilization, and modernization of a complex hybrid infrastructure environment. The ideal candidate will take hands-on operational ownership of maintaining a primarily Linux-based virtualized infrastructure (legacy Red Hat Enterprise Linux) while driving strategic migration initiatives toward modernized and cloud-capable platforms. This role requires a blend of deep Linux expertise, strong Windows infrastructure knowledge, enterprise backup management, and strategic engineering leadership to mentor junior staff.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Infrastructure Operations: Administer and support legacy Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, optimize VMware (or equivalent) virtualization platforms, and manage enterprise backup, retention, and disaster recovery operations.
  • Windows Infrastructure Administration: Maintain Microsoft Active Directory environments, including DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and hybrid Linux/Windows interoperability and authentication systems.
  • Infrastructure Modernization: Assess aging infrastructure to identify modernization opportunities, develop migration strategies for cloud adoption, and recommend architectural, security, and automation improvements to reduce technical debt.
  • Engineering Leadership: Serve as the senior technical escalation point, establish operational best practices and documentation, and mentor junior technical staff (such as Field Service Engineer IV).
  • Security & Reliability: Support vulnerability remediation, infrastructure hardening, and backup integrity validation, while participating in incident response and root cause analysis.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • 10-12 years of enterprise infrastructure engineering experience with a Bachelors of Science degree.
  • Deep experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux administration, including strong support for legacy Linux environment.
  • Experience managing VMware virtualization platforms and enterprise backup/disaster recovery solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server administration, Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Proven experience leading infrastructure modernization or cloud migration efforts.
  • Strong systems analysis and troubleshooting skills, with excellent written and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with AWS, Azure, or hybrid cloud infrastructure.
  • Automation experience utilizing Bash, PowerShell, Ansible, or Python.
  • Experience supporting operational technology, scientific, or engineering environments.
  • Industry certifications such as RHCSA/RHCE, VMware, Microsoft, or relevant cloud certifications.

This is the projected compensation range for this position. There are differentiating factors that can impact a final salary/hourly rate, including, but not limited to, Contract Wage Determination, relevant work experience, skills and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location (For Remote Opportunities), education and certifications as well as Federal Government Contract Labor categories.
