What does a junior hydrogeologist do?

A Junior Hydrogeologist assists in studying the distribution, movement, and quality of groundwater beneath the Earth's surface. Their tasks often include collecting field samples, conducting site assessments, analyzing data, and helping prepare technical reports under the supervision of more experienced hydrogeologists. They may work on projects involving water resource management, contamination assessment, and environmental impact studies. This entry-level position is ideal for recent graduates or those new to the field, providing valuable hands-on experience and training.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior hydrogeologist?

To thrive as a Junior Hydrogeologist, you need a solid background in geology, hydrology, and environmental science, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with groundwater modeling software (such as MODFLOW), GIS tools, and field instrumentation is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for producing accurate assessments of groundwater resources and supporting environmental decision-making.

What are some common challenges faced by junior hydrogeologists in their first year on the job?

Junior hydrogeologists often encounter challenges such as adapting to fieldwork demands, learning to interpret complex hydrogeological data, and balancing office-based analysis with on-site investigations. Navigating unfamiliar equipment and safety protocols can be initially daunting, but mentorship from senior team members helps ease the transition. Additionally, junior professionals may find collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—such as geologists, engineers, and environmental scientists—both rewarding and challenging as they learn to communicate findings effectively and contribute to broader project goals.

What is the difference between Junior Hydrogeologist vs Geologist?

Employer & Industry UsageEnvironmental consulting firms, government agencies, water resource companiesMining, oil & gas, environmental consulting, research institutions

The main difference between a Junior Hydrogeologist and a Geologist lies in their focus area. Junior Hydrogeologists primarily work on groundwater-related projects, while Geologists have a broader scope including mineral, structural, and surface geology. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but their specific job functions and work environments differ based on specialization.

Job description

Senior Hydrogeologist

ITASCA North America | U.S.-based

About the role

ITASCA North America is seeking a Senior Hydrogeologist to support challenging mining, groundwater, and environmental projects across the U.S. and North America.

This role is suited for a technically strong professional with experience in groundwater hydrology, contaminant hydrogeology, field investigations, groundwater flow and contaminant transport modeling, and technical reporting. Mining experience is strongly valued, particularly in mine water management, dewatering, depressurization, seepage, closure, permitting support, and hydrogeologic support for mine planning and operations.

Why this role matters

Water is often a defining factor in how mining, infrastructure, energy, and environmental projects are planned, permitted, operated, and closed.

As a Senior Hydrogeologist, you will help clients understand groundwater systems, evaluate uncertainty, and turn field data, project constraints, and models into practical recommendations. Your work will support mine water management, groundwater characterization, dewatering strategy, contaminant transport assessment, permitting, closure planning, and risk management.

What you'll do

  • Lead or support hydrogeology, mine water, groundwater, and environmental projects.
  • Plan, supervise, and interpret field investigations, including drilling, monitoring well installation, groundwater and surface water sampling, aquifer testing, and hydraulic testing.
  • Interpret monitoring and testing data and develop conceptual hydrogeologic models.
  • Develop, apply, or review groundwater flow and contaminant transport models.
  • Analyze hydrogeologic, geochemical, and environmental data.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, proposals, scopes of work, budgets, and work plans.
  • Manage technical tasks or projects, including schedules, budgets, deliverables, and quality.
  • Communicate technical findings to clients, regulators, project teams, and other stakeholders.
  • Supervise and mentor junior and intermediate staff.
  • Contribute to client relationships, proposal development, and the growth of ITASCA North America's hydrogeology practice.

What you bring

Required

  • Advanced degree in hydrogeology, geochemistry, environmental engineering, or a related field.
  • Approximately 10-20 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Proven technical excellence and sound professional judgment in hydrogeology or a related field.
  • Professional registration by a recognized organization, or ability to obtain registration where required.
  • Experience with hydrogeologic field investigations, groundwater monitoring, aquifer or hydraulic testing, and data interpretation.
  • Experience developing or interpreting conceptual hydrogeologic models.
  • Experience with groundwater flow and/or contaminant transport modeling.
  • Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently on complex assignments and manage scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring technical staff.
  • Ability to support proposals, work programs, and client development.

Strongly valued

  • Mining industry experience, particularly in mine water management, pit dewatering, depressurization, seepage, closure, water balance, permitting, or operational hydrogeology.
  • Experience with contaminant hydrogeology, aqueous geochemistry, groundwater/surface water interaction, water supply, or remediation.
  • Experience with MODFLOW, FEFLOW, MINEDW, MT3D, or other transport modeling tools, GIS, or data analysis.
  • Experience supporting environmental impact assessment, permitting, regulatory engagement, or closure planning.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams involving hydrogeology, geomechanics, engineering geology, geochemistry, data science, and numerical modeling.

Why ITASCA

For more than 45 years, ITASCA has helped clients solve complex geomechanics, hydrogeology, and engineering geology challenges through technical depth, practical judgment, and innovation.

At ITASCA, you will work on challenging projects where standard approaches are often not enough. Our work combines field experience, scientific and engineering interpretation, advanced analysis, and state-of-the-art ITASCA software to help clients make better decisions.

We are a collaborative, collegial, employee-owned company where technical excellence, curiosity, mentorship, mutual respect, and shared success matter.

Location and travel

This is a full-time position based in the United States. Preferred locations are Denver/Lakewood, Colorado, or Minneapolis, Minnesota, but other U.S. locations, including hybrid/remote work options, may be considered for the right candidate.

Travel may be required for client meetings, site visits, field programs, conferences, and internal collaboration.

ITASCA may provide employment-based visa sponsorship (e.g. H1-B, L-1, TN, etc.) for this role, subject to business needs, candidate qualifications, and immigration regulations.

Compensation and benefits

We value your contributions and offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Performance bonuses, including cash and company stock
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits for you and your family
  • Generous paid time off from day one
  • Paid holidays
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid parental leave
  • Company-paid short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance

The anticipated salary range is $105,000-$130,000. Final compensation will depend on experience and qualifications.

Take the next step in your career and become a valued member of our employee-owned company. Join us at ITASCA, where innovation meets excellence!
