What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time hydrogeologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Hydrogeologist, you need a solid background in geology, hydrology, and environmental science, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Experience with GIS software, groundwater modeling tools (such as MODFLOW), and field sampling equipment is highly valuable, along with certifications like Professional Geologist (PG) in some regions. These competencies are essential for accurately assessing groundwater resources, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting sustainable water management projects.

What is a full time hydrogeologist?

Full time hydrogeologists are professionals who study the distribution, movement, and quality of groundwater beneath the Earth's surface. They are typically employed by environmental consulting firms, government agencies, or research institutions, and work on projects related to water resources, contamination assessment, and environmental protection. Their work can involve field investigations, data analysis, and the development of models to predict groundwater flow and contamination. Full time hydrogeologists often collaborate with engineers, geologists, and other scientists to solve complex water-related problems and ensure sustainable use of groundwater resources.

Collaboration usually involves sharing field data, jointly interpreting hydrogeological models, and coordinating on-site investigations to ensure comprehensive analysis of water resources. Effective communication and teamwork are vital, as hydrogeologists contribute their expertise on groundwater flow and contamination while integrating insights from other specialists to develop practical solutions. This collaborative environment not only enhances project outcomes but also offers valuable learning and networking opportunities.

Job description

Project Hydrogeologist
Montgomery & Associates (M&A) is seeking a full-time hydrogeologist to join our California team in a project-leadership role. You'll manage tasks and projects, lead technical work, mentor junior staff, and work directly with clients, regulators, and M&A project leaders — with a central focus on Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) planning and implementation.
Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, M&A is a growing firm of respected water-resource professionals expanding across the western U.S. and South America. Our California team comprises 24 professionals across four offices — Oakland, Sacramento, Monterey, and Pasadena. This position, based in Sacramento or Oakland, supports groundwater resource planning and SGMA implementation statewide, with a strong emphasis on Northern California and the Central Valley. Staff work at least 50% in-office to promote collaboration and mentoring.
What You'll Do
  • Manage and technically lead multi-disciplinary hydrogeology and groundwater resource tasks, with a primary focus on SGMA planning and implementation
  • Collaborate with our groundwater modeling team to develop hydrogeologic conceptual models and numerical models
  • Design and manage field investigations, well drilling and testing, and monitoring programs, and interpret hydrogeologic data
  • Prepare technical reports, proposals, and work plans; review deliverables and mentor junior staff
Education and Professional Credentials
Graduate degree in hydrology, geology, civil engineering, or environmental engineering, or professional registration (P.G. or P.E.). Both preferred; at least one required.
Required Qualifications
  • At least 8 years of water resources consulting experience, preferably with substantial SGMA-related work
  • Strong command of hydrogeologic principles applied to characterizing and assessing groundwater systems, including SGMA regulatory requirements
  • Task and project management experience
  • Proficiency with standard analytical tools; demonstrated technical writing and group/client presentation skills
  • Strong organizational, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills; team-oriented, with experience delegating and reviewing staff deliverables
  • Interest in professional organizations, including presenting at conferences
Your benefits at Montgomery & Associates will include:
  • Competitive benefits and salary in an expanding team-oriented company
  • Dynamic work environment with safety and technical training provided by the company
  • Interesting and collaborative multidisciplinary projects
  • On the job mentoring by senior professionals
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account; HRA
  • Long- and short-term disability
  • Life/AD&D insurance
  • Vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave
  • Employer matching 401k retirement plan
Monthly Base Salary Range: $8,000 - $10,000
Annual Salary Range Including Bonuses: $105,000 - $135,000
Compensation for qualified extra hours could increase annual compensation.
We are an Equal Opportunity Employer
