What is a junior full stack developer?

A Junior Full Stack Developer is an entry-level software professional who works on both the front-end and back-end parts of web applications. They are skilled in basic programming languages and frameworks needed for creating user interfaces as well as handling server-side logic and databases. Typically, juniors work under the guidance of more experienced developers, assisting with coding, debugging, and testing tasks while gradually building their expertise. Their role often involves learning and adapting to new technologies as they gain experience in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior full stack developer?

To thrive as a Junior Full Stack Developer, you need a solid understanding of both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (Node.js, Python, Java, or similar) programming, typically supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, databases (SQL/NoSQL), and frameworks such as React or Express is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure you can contribute effectively to diverse projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate within development teams.

How do junior full stack developers typically balance learning new technologies with meeting project deadlines?

As a Junior Full Stack Developer, you’ll often juggle learning new frameworks or languages while contributing to active projects. Many teams support this by pairing juniors with more experienced developers, offering code reviews, and allocating time for professional development within sprint cycles. While deadlines are important, managers usually recognize the learning curve and provide guidance to help you prioritize tasks and grow your skills without being overwhelmed. Open communication with your team about your progress and challenges is key to maintaining this balance.

Zero Homes

Job description

Our mission is to rebuild American communities through healthy, affordable homes.
At Zero Homes, we operate on a simple premise: when you make contractors successful, homeowners win. The current home services industry is fragmented, complex, and opaque, which is frustrating for homeowners and exhausting for contractors. We are changing this by building a home upgrade marketplace that enables a simple, central, transparent process for homeowners and contractors to complete projects.
Through our platform we handle design, quoting, procurement, and customer service, allowing our contractor network to focus on what they do best and make them money: delivering projects. For homeowners, this delivers a predictable, high-quality, and transparent experience-transforming home upgrades from a source of anxiety into a seamless experience. Our vision is to create a world where homeowners and contractors in all 50 states can leverage our platform to execute thousands of projects every week within the next 36 months.
We work by a clear set of values:
  • Be a "can kid," not a "can't kid": We own our outcomes and go to extraordinary lengths to solve problems.
  • Go fast, be clear: Speed is our advantage, and we sweat the details to deliver an extraordinary customer experience.
  • Customer & Contractor Obsessed: We have a deep, personal understanding of the work to be done. We stay curious about our contractors' craft and the stories of our homeowners.
  • Win, as a team: We are building an iconic business that will reinvent the industry, and will do so together.

If you are ready to build a world-class consumer experience that genuinely rebuilds American communities, come build with us.
About the Role & Your Impact
This is an exciting opportunity for those with 1-5 years of professional experience to join an early stage company of talented engineers and designers, led by seasoned climate tech veterans. We are looking for candidates with outstanding potential and serious work ethic. If you want to spend the next 5 years of your career learning and growing faster than you can imagine, and you are eager to put in the long hours necessary, Zero is the place for you. Junior Engineers work in small teams (1 designer and 1-2 programmers) in six-week cycles to take well defined projects and improve existing features. You will be given ample access to coaching, mentoring, and collaboration across the team, but will also be expected to operate effectively with minimal oversight. We are relentlessly focused on sustainable productivity. You should expect long stretches of deep work, no standing meetings, effective in person collaboration with stakeholders and peers, as well as flexibility around your personal life.
The products we build serve a diverse range of customers: homeowners, contractors, and utilities, as well as the Zero employees that support these customers. Examples include a CAD application that designs HVAC and energy efficiency projects, our soon to be launched website refresh, and web apps that allow contractors and utilities to review and approve jobs. These products are built using Nuxt, Typescript & Tailwind, but no one on our team had experience with that complete stack before joining, and we don't expect you to either. No matter what product you are working on, the code you write will be directly responsible for deploying millions of dollars into safer, healthier, and more cost-effective homes.
What You Bring
You want to do big things, and you want to join a team that will teach you how. You are ambitious, hard working, and hungry for growth. You have high standards for yourself, and your team. You are relentless in the face of challenges, and recognize that the only path to excellence is through failure.
You are a detail-oriented systems thinker. You want to learn how to own the whole product, not just isolated features. You always anchor your work on user needs and seek to understand how users operate in a larger context. You may not have experience in climate tech or building science, but you are eager to dive into the messy world of residential electrification.
You have an eye for elegance - the confluence of beauty, effectiveness, and simplicity - and there are early signs that you can build elegant digital experiences from the ground up. You value functional beauty in the physical world, and you are excited to build software that will create healthy, comfortable, and sustainable living spaces for our customers.
You are a pragmatic team player. You know that products only matter if they ship, and are an effective collaborator with product designers and senior engineers. You want lots of freedom, but you know that comes with the responsibility to communicate and deliver. You are humble, kind and coachable.
You are enthusiastic about in-person work. You want to know your users by name, meet them in person, and you want to see them smile when they use your designs. You live within 50 miles of Denver, CO or are willing to relocate.
Nice To Haves
- Experience vibe coding and/or using agents
- Experience building native mobile applications
- Experience at early-stage startups and/or fast-growing environments
- Strong math background or practical data science experience
- Experience in climate tech
$90,000 - $145,000 a year
- Meaningful equity
- Optional annual bonus for outstanding performance
- Medical, Dental, and Vision
- Unlimited PTO + unlimited sick days
- Fun office culture with the best espresso and tea setup you've ever seen
- Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday in the office at minimum, and flexible working hours
- Workstation stipend
Zero Homes is committed to creating an inclusive and accessible experience for all candidates. We encourage you to apply even if you believe that you do not meet all of the above criteria!
