Job Title: Embedded Software DeveloperJob Description

We are seeking an experienced Embedded Software Developer to join a board support package (BSP) and bootloader development team working on infotainment, connectivity, and other hardware modules for next-generation vehicles. In this role, you design and implement BSP and secure bootloader features on embedded Linux and related platforms, contribute to platform evolution and board bring-up activities, and help solve complex embedded software challenges in a highly collaborative engineering environment.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement BSP and bootloader features as part of a larger team-based embedded software project.
  • Design and implement secure boot features for production and future-generation platforms.
  • Create clear and detailed software design documents that capture architecture, interfaces, and implementation details.
  • Participate actively in design reviews, providing constructive feedback and incorporating review outcomes into the codebase.
  • Assist with product verification and validation activities, including troubleshooting, debugging, and testing on target hardware.
  • Use debugging tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers to diagnose and resolve low-level software and hardware interaction issues.
  • Support board bring-up activities for new hardware platforms, including at least two complete board bring-ups.
  • Read and interpret electronic schematics to understand hardware design and inform software implementation.
  • Develop and maintain device drivers and low-level software for interfaces such as UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, and CAN FD.
  • Implement, maintain, and improve custom bootloaders tailored to specific hardware and security requirements.
  • Use version control tools such as Git or SVN to manage source code, branching, and collaborative development workflows.
  • Communicate technical issues and risks early to team members and stakeholders and propose practical solutions.
  • Contribute to platform evolution projects and next-generation platform initiatives based on skills and performance.
  • Take ownership of significant technical features and participate in resolving customer-critical issues in a timely manner.
Essential Skills
  • At least 4 years of experience in the design and development of board support packages (BSP) and bootloaders on embedded platforms.
  • Proven programming experience in C and assembly language for embedded systems.
  • Hands-on experience completing at least two board bring-ups on new hardware platforms.
  • Ability to read and understand electronic schematics to support low-level software development.
  • Strong knowledge of embedded operating systems, particularly Linux.
  • Experience developing embedded software, including device drivers and low-level interfaces such as UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, and CAN FD.
  • Skilled in using debugging tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers to investigate hardware–software interactions.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing a custom bootloader.
  • Experience with version control tools such as SVN and Git for collaborative software development.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and intuitive debugging skills for complex embedded software issues.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Knowledge of QNX as an embedded operating system.
  • Detailed understanding of ARM processors, including ARM A-series and M-series architectures.
  • Experience working with eMMC storage devices.
  • Experience with NAND and NOR memory controllers and their integration into embedded systems.
  • Understanding of the SHE (Secure Hardware Extension) specification.
  • Experience with Hardware Security Modules (HSM) or other SHE-based hardware security modules.
  • Knowledge of cryptographic algorithms and concepts, including RSA, DES, AES, SHA-1, and related security mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with AI tools is viewed positively, although AI experience is not required and will not significantly influence hiring decisions.
Work Environment

This role is based on-site at an engineering center in Ottawa, with a work mode of five days per week on location. You will work in a collaborative technical environment focused on embedded systems, BSP, and bootloader technologies, supporting current production platforms and contributing to future-generation platform development. The setting involves close interaction with hardware, participation in board bring-up activities, and hands-on debugging using tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers. Contractors initially support existing platforms and may transition to next-generation initiatives based on their skills and performance, with opportunities to take ownership of significant technical features and contribute directly to resolving customer-critical issues.
