Junior Embedded Linux information

What does a junior embedded Linux engineer do?

A Junior Embedded Linux Engineer assists in developing, testing, and maintaining software that runs on embedded devices using the Linux operating system. Their responsibilities often include writing code in languages like C or C++, configuring Linux kernel and device drivers, and troubleshooting hardware-software integration issues. They typically work under the guidance of senior engineers to learn best practices and contribute to projects such as IoT devices, consumer electronics, and industrial systems. This role requires a foundational understanding of Linux, programming, and embedded systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior embedded Linux engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Embedded Linux Engineer, you need proficiency in C/C++ programming, an understanding of Linux operating systems, and a relevant degree in computer science or electrical engineering. Familiarity with build systems (like Yocto or Buildroot), version control tools (such as Git), and debugging hardware/software interfaces is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and tackle technical challenges. These skills ensure reliable system development, efficient troubleshooting, and smooth integration of embedded Linux solutions in real-world products.

What is the difference between Junior Embedded Linux vs Junior Firmware Engineer?

We push the limits of innovation to solve the world’s most important challenges—striving for execution excellence, while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Join us as we shape the future of AI and beyond.  Together, we advance your career.

THE ROLE:

AMD's Embedded Business Unit is seeking a System Level Test (SLT) Product Development Engineer to join our growing Product and Test Engineering team. In this role, you will develop and drive production-ready SLT solutions for next-generation embedded processors powering automotive, robotics, industrial, networking, storage, aerospace, and defense applications.

You will play a critical role in bringing new products from concept to high-volume manufacturing, partnering with Product Engineering, Diagnostics, BIOS, Software, Quality, Reliability, and Manufacturing teams worldwide. Your work will directly influence product quality, yield, test coverage, and cost, while helping AMD deliver industry-leading technology to market.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge processor technologies, solve complex system-level challenges, and make a measurable impact across the product lifecycle.

THE PERSON:

You are a highly motivated engineer who enjoys solving challenging technical problems across hardware, software, firmware, and manufacturing environments. You thrive in fast-paced NPI development, take ownership of results, and work effectively with cross-functional teams to drive products from development into production.

You combine strong debugging and analytical skills with excellent communication and collaboration abilities. You are passionate about product quality, continuous improvement, and delivering innovative test solutions that scale globally.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, validate, and optimize System Level Test (SLT) solutions for AMD embedded processors.
  • Drive test coverage, quality, yield, cost, and test time improvements throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define SLT strategy, test content, diagnostics, and characterization requirements.
  • Lead pre-silicon and post-silicon test bring-up activities, including test flow integration, hardware checkout, and production readiness.
  • Perform silicon characterization across process, voltage, and temperature conditions.
  • Debug product and test infrastructure issues spanning hardware, software, diagnostics, and platform components.
  • Investigate yield and quality issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive corrective actions.
  • Support production releases, test program correlation, and manufacturing ramp activities.
  • Partner with OSATs and global manufacturing teams to deploy and sustain production test solutions.
  • Leverage test data and analytics to improve product quality, diagnostic effectiveness, and upstream test coverage.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on yield, quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on critical projects.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong expertise in System Level Test (SLT), system validation, or x86-based platform architectures.
  • Experience developing and debugging SLT test programs, test flows, diagnostics, and characterization plans in an NPI environment.
  • Knowledge of silicon characterization, yield analysis, and failure diagnosis methodologies.
  • Experience with platform bring-up, hardware validation, and system-level debugging.
  • Familiarity with IC test methodologies and ASIC product development.
  • Working knowledge of BIOS, firmware, operating system kernels, and device drivers.
  • Experience using Linux, Unix, and Windows environments.
  • Programming or scripting experience in languages such as Python, C/C++, Java, Perl, or Ruby.
  • Familiarity with Git or other version control systems.
  • Experience working with manufacturing partners and OSATs is a plus.
  • RMA debug experience is a plus.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred.

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
